This feature is really needed for the sake of privacy.
New messages popping up can be embarrassing, distracting or a nuisance (Among other things) to have new messages popping up when a person is otherwise occupied on their computer.
It would be nice to have some kind of tray notification of a new message window or even task bar. Whatever the case, there really should be a way to suppress new messages from becoming the focus.
I resolve this for now by always having messaging window opened, even if minimized. I do this because as we know, if one is having a conversation already, new messages will open in that already opened window, so the problem applies to situations where one does not have a message window open.

I think you're talking about new message windows appearing in front of other windows, not the tray notifications. Tweaking the description slightly.
Summary: Suppress new message pop-up. → Suppress new message window.

Thank you Clokep. I think the option on other messengers is, minimize new message Windows. However, I chose suppress, in an effort to suggest that any method of suppressing it would be welcome over current behavior. Some clients give you the option to have it not even show up on the task bar, but indicated somehow in the systemtray.
(can't say I personally care for the latter, but feel this is not really about my preference, but practicality, so passing on anything I feel may help)

Confirming this as a bug and tweaking a few settings. Is this also an issue on Linux and/or Mac? Also this bug seems to encompass a few different ideas, but since it's titled about suppressing new messages, I'm going to assume that's the "real" bug report.

My suggestion in the duplicate bug was not to suppress (by hiding to tray/etc) the new message windows, but to simply make new messages windows not steal focus when they are popped on screen. The equivalent of a "pop-under" window in a web browser. (though in a web browser, that's typically undesired behaviour :) )

Is this a duplicate of bug 953847 (bio 406), deOmega?

Correct, I think it is fair to say it is a duplicate. Please consider the suppression aspect as a way to manage new message Windows.

Merging these bugs then...
