*** Original post on bio 1625 by Vincent Capelle <vicnett AT gmail.com> at 2012-08-09 02:26:00 UTC *** In Ubuntu with Unity and with default settings, the Instantbird systray icon does not appear. Instantbird behaves normally and as expected, but as the icon is invisible the application cannot be restored if it is minimized to tray. As far as I can understand, in Unity the way systray icons are expected to behave has changed, and any icon that does not behave in that way is not displayed. The expected behavior is that a click, left or right, will show a drop-down menu that integrates with the Unity panel. Simply click on any panel icon in Unity to observe what they expect. Nothing is really broken, and it is possible to force the icon to be displayed. As a workaround, one can follow the steps outlined at http://www.howtogeek.com/68119/how-to-bring-app-icons-back-into-unitys-system-tray/ to whitelist the Instantbird icon (or even all icons) so that it will be shown and behave as expected (just not as Unity expects). An Ubuntu user with little expertise is unlikely to follow these steps, or to even find them, so to them Instantbird's minimmize to tray feature will appear to be broken.

Summary: In Ubuntu (with Unity), the System Tray icon does not appear. Because of this, once minimized to tray, Instantbird cannot be restored. → The system tray icon in Unity does not appear (Instantbird cannot be restored from minimized)

To reproduce it : - In pref, choose "Minimized" instead of "Close" - Open "Contact List" and new chat windows - Click on "close" on "contact list" windows To restore the contact list, I must close all "chat windows" and re-click on instantbird icon menu on unity board. Tested on ubuntu 11.10 and 12.10
On the behalf of Florian: Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
