User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.8; rv:27.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/27.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20140113161826 Steps to reproduce: added code for a google calendar widget (http://www.mediawikiwidgets.org/Google_Calendar) to test page for community building Actual results: code was entered Expected results: google calendar shows up
Widgets like this would require the Widget extension be installed. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Widget See the security implications on that page.

I believe the widget extension (and thus this particular widget) would be sensible and appropriate additions to our installations, especially as this seems to be the way MediaWiki is moving as regards add-ons.
Alison, could you clarify where you've gotten the information that the Widget extension "seems to be the way MediaWiki is moving as regards add-ons"?? I ask because I haven't gotten this impression and am relatively involved in MW development. Gadgets (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Gadgets) are probably what the MW community would point you to for on-wiki development, but even those aren't the same as Widgets.

Ever confirmed: true
It could be I was being misled! On the extensions:widget page [1] it states "he Widgets extension has become the generally-accepted means of embedding raw HTML in MediaWiki, and many pre-written Widgets are available.". Do I now take it this is hype? I'm happy to go with your recommendation ;-) [1] https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Widget
Looks like that line was added by User:BrucePerens back in July 2011[1]. I've seen the Widget extension used mostly by the SMW community. I think it is misleading, so I'll remove it. That said, none of this should affect wikimo use or non-use of the extension. It should be reviewed, though. Fair enough. And yes, I'd want us to be sure of the security implications before we go any further.

I reviewed both and don't see any problems. They good to me.

Depends on: 1044583
I split out installing the Widgets extension into is own bug (bug 1044583), for simplicity. This bug is now only about installing the Google Calendar widget once the extension is installed.
