The reflows caused by the tab opening and expanding are likely not helping with the smoothness of the customization transition. We could wait for the tab to finish animating before starting the transition.
Calling it a night - but tomorrow, I'll take a reflow profile of entering customize mode with browser.tabs.animate disabled and see how much of a win it is.
Frustratingly, I can't seem to prove with the reflow profiler that waiting for the tab to finish opening speeds us up. Subjectively speaking though, it's a palpable difference - especially when coupled with bwinton's patch in bug 962677. So I think this is definitely worth pursuing.
Seems like I've filed this one before.
