Details

Linux 2001082208 I use fvwm2 as my window manager. In its config file, I have this: # The Mozilla main window. Style "*Build ID*" \ StartsOnPage 0 1 1, \ StartIconic This is supposed to start all Mozilla windows as iconic on a specific desktop page. My problem is that Mozilla now sometimes immediately de-iconifies as it loads a page. Here's what I've seen: 1. Start Mozilla from a prompt. The main window goes iconic and stays that way. (This is correct). 2. Start Mozilla, and then use File->New Navigator window. Ditto. 3. Start Mozilla, and middle-click on a link. The new window opens, goes iconic, and as soon as the page starts to load, de-iconifies itself on top of my current Mozilla window. This is wrong. 4. Right-click on a link, and select "Open in New Window." Same as #3. So something is going on inside the "open in new window" code that causes Mozilla to de-iconify. I don't know enough about X to be able to say what could do this. One other thing. This problem used to be sporadic - sometimes Mozilla would auto-de-iconify, sometimes not. Within the past week or so, it's become 100% reproducable. I don't know it it's related to the changes checked in for the on-going "Mozilla steals focus from other windows" problem, and I was under the impression that that one was fixed, anyway.

Sorry, I thought that was clear from the bug report. Linux, Mandrake, kernel 2.4.9, fvwm2 2.4.0 window manager. Updating OS->Linux, though this might be a bug on any Unix.
OS: other → Linux
More information: Windows 98, Mozilla 20010826xx. Use right click, then Open in New Window. As soon as the window frame appears, minimize this new window. When the page loads, it de-minimizes. just like under Linux. Real annoying. It never did this on Windows, as far as I remember.
Reporter, this sounds like a bug with the windowmanager, since i can't reproduce it with either wmaker and assorted others (excluding fvwm2), but I'd like to hear a bit more. Can we have an xprops dump of a click on the iconified window? and on the expanded window? Can you reproduce this with other windowmanagers?

I tried to reproduce w/wmaker and black box - no go. I'm going to try to figure out (from the fvwm2 developers) what's causing this, and report back. In the meantime, I ran across this in the fvwm FAQ: 5.7 Why won't the StartIconic style work with {Netscape, etc.}? A: The application won't allow it. This has only been observed with Netscape. When Netscape starts up, FVWM starts the main window in the iconic state. Netscape immediately issues another MapRequest, to which the window manager must respond by de-iconifying the window, according to the ICCCM rules. (Netscape can be persuaded to start iconic, however, by invoking it with the -iconic command line flag.) Any chance Mozilla started to do MapRequests recently?

un-duping, this is on more recent builds then 77675. There is a newer version of that bug (which is not already fixed) somewhere, which this should be duped against.
