1. setup old sync on fx-team build
2. in preferences > unlink device
3. sign in with fxa
4. select sync now.
result: you get a yellow notification that you're using the wrong recovery key

I also see this in my log:
1391124395324 Sync.Engine.History DEBUG Records that will be uploaded again because the server couldn't store them:

I think this might be invalid - bug 965896 hasn't yet landed and is what will allow this.
