Its also quite possible that simply the old functionality is not supported anymore in KitKat (or the latest version of Google Search for Android).

Google has removed global search due to performance reasons in [1] and App Indexing does not fit our use case at all as it uses meta tags web pages that Google itself indexes to allow deep linking from Google search results. As far as I have found, global search is still a system-level permission that Google's apps can access [2]. Movement to close this bug?
