User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:27.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/27.0 SeaMonkey/2.24 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140203230027
Steps to reproduce:
Click on any message previously marked as junk in the message list from any account
Actual results:
The message pane opens, even when not configured to do so, and remains open to display the contents of any message selected further, until it is manually closed again by click on its drag-border or by pressing F8.
Expected results:
The message pane should not open when it is not configured to do so, before the user sends a double-click or presses Enter for any message item in the messages list pane.

What I see may be related:
If I select a non-junk message in the Inbox, the preview pane remains as-is. But if I mark the current message as Junk, it is moved to the Junk folder, but the preview pane opens with a junk warning banner for the new current message, which is of course not the one just marked as junk but (depending on its position within the folder) the previous or next one.
If I click the Junk icon (or rather, the non-Junk bullet to make it a Junk trashcan) on a message other than the current one, I get neither this spurious junk banner nor the spurious opening of the preview pane..

This was seen in Sm 2.27 in comment #0 and 1, but just in case someone were wondering, I still see it in the current 2.32a1.

I could swear that once upon a time this behaviour wasn't present, but for the love of me I couldn't pinpoint the change. No later than SeaMonkey 2.24 according to comment #0.
Keywords: regression,
regressionwindow-wanted
Hi Tony. Yes, you are right. This behaviour was not present before, but something has been broken in the mail subsystem and has not been fixed yet.
It seems that throughout the latest versions this bug behaviour has changed, so I am editing this bug report in order to reflect the remaining issue:
When we have an originally non-junk message selected in the messages list, and we click on the "Junk" icon to mark it as such, then the message panel opens by itself, but it comes blank, not showing the message, but with a yellow bar on the top saying "SeamonKey thinks this message is junk".
Summary: Message pane opens by itself after selecting a junk mail message item → Message pane opens by itself when marking an email message as junk
Summary: Message pane opens by itself when marking an email message as junk → Empty message pane opens by itself after marking a message as junk in the messages list
Whiteboard: [seamonkey-2.24-affected] → [seamonkey-2.23-affected]
Just a little heads up:
still persisting in 2.40.
Here some additional details I noticed (that are not too clear from the discussion so far)
- it's only happening when marking a single message as junk/not junk via the icon in the list or via selecting it in the list and using the button in the top-bar
- after a while the bug seems to disappear until seamonkey is restarted (after closing the pane for about the 6th or 7th time in a row after marking messages as junk/not-junk the pane stayed closed for the current session)

Additional note from the original reporter: After many tests, we could confirm that this bug appeared during the change from version 2.22.1 to 2.23.

Seamonkey mail list view after pressing <j>.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0 SeaMonkey/2.49.1
This only happens when a single mail is selected.

Thank you Robert for adding the attachments. Let´s hope someone gets assigned to fix this function which was broken in version 2.23 and has remained this way during the last four years.

I think I see something related to this. When I notice a suspicious message in my in-box my habit is to press F8 to turn off the preview pane, then I select the message and view the message with ctrl-u, i.e. view message source. If I decide it is spam or malicious, I press the junk flag (the dot in the junk status column) and the message goes into junk. But then the next message in the list is displayed with the preview pane on even though it should still be off.
