Kyle suggested this last night; seems useful for identifying problems a little quicker.

And, as Jesse pointed out, it's also useful for fuzzing terminal support for UTF16 surrogates!
Hmm, I'm not aware of any case where this would have helped.
I can see it being useful in some cases, but it also makes already large logs larger.
