I haven't been able to reproduce this, but I had a trash can with over 3 megs in it, over 1000 messages and for some reason, it once started to refresh the number of unread/total messages. Since I wanted to delete these messages anyway, I didn't wait, right-clicked the trash can and selected "empty trash". Result: the trash was _not_ emptied (the 3 megs file still existed) but the trash can disappeared in the mail front end. Workaround: Go to your profile, delete the trash file and restart mozilla.
Get the same problem with mozilla 1.2b. I try to install the lastest nightly build ( Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/20021030 ), but I got the same problem. I don't know how, but the trash re-appear once; I try to empty it again, and it re-disappear... (WIN2000 SP3 - MOZILLA 1.2b release & nightly build 02103008)
Greindl Jacques, was the size or the number of messages similar to my case? Did you try to empty the trash _while_ it was re-counting the messages in it?
I don't exactly now the number of message, but there was many ( 1000 or more I think ). And it was still counting while I click on "Empty trash"... Same as you so. But I applied your workaround, and now I don't have any problem.

Ricky, was folder imap, pop, or local?
By that time, it must have been local. I think I didn't have IMAP back then yet. I haven't been able to reproduce it anyway.
