I am not 100% sure we should do this, because I never actually use that button. But right now it's quite far away when you have a big screen.
At the time, placement of this button was determined by where the host OS generally places the close button on horizontally stretched UI elements. See bug 776708 for more info. I *could* n-i Stephen for additional confirmation, but I'm tempted to WONTFIX this.
I do use this button, and I was very disappointed when it was moved to the right end. Unless the browser window is quite narrow, the button is too far away from the other controls. Its previous position at the left end was much more convenient and intuitive. Just because the close button is to the right on other windows is not sufficient reason for messing with a time-tested feature.
Priority: -- → P5
When the search wraps, the close button isn't even visible if the window width is smaller than approx. 1080px. And I (have to) use a browser window down to 860px width small (with two windows side-by-side, different width for each). Please go ahead and move the close button to the left. Or optionally, prevent it from vanishing if the browser width is too small (after a page wrap when searching). See also: bug 1222710
