Messages like this one are supposed to play a soundbite when opened. AFAIK it's an Outlook-only thing, but I think Mozilla could implement it too: Path: PurpleI!not-for-mail From: "Buck22" <villey22@hotmail.com> Newsgroups: formula1 Subject: BABY PEANUT Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2001 20:39:40 -0400 Organization: Web Site Visitor Lines: 846 Message-ID: <9oojhf$8cm$1@tora.PurpleI.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: 24.101.115.55 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/related; type="multipart/alternative"; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0274_01C14539.090BB860" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4807.1700 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4807.1700 Xref: PurpleI formula1:188416 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0274_01C14539.090BB860 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_001_0275_01C14539.090BB860" ------=_NextPart_001_0275_01C14539.090BB860 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Yesterday, Rubens Barrichello celebrated the birth of his first child, = Eduardo "Scrappy" Barrichello. confirming, but multipart/alternative means you show _one_ of the parts -- the one in the format you support best. This seems to be a gross misuse of the type. multipart/mixed should be used here....

in that message, the wave part is supposed to replace the text or HTML one. But as Mozilla doesn't not play inline wave document, we display the HTML part. We will not fix that as multipart/alternative wave part are mostly used by spamers. If the sender want to send a wave document the user is able to see and play, he/she need to use multipart/mixed. Also, in that message, the HTML part is linked to the wave part but that against the RFC. For that they need to use multipart/related. If that was the case, we would not have play the wave automatically but the user would have been free to open it by itself.

I don't whether this bug should be connected with 123485, however I do think their is some significant cross-over. It is important that people who cannot read have access to email, and offering the opportunity to hear spoken messages is one alternative. I also consider that mozilla would be improved by the ability to play sounds on event, such as mouseover, onload, etc. My users have a severe learning difficulty, cannot read, and may need sound in order to develop their understanding of cause and effect, and help learning. thanks

Eeeh, if someone cannot read they won't need sound attached to emails, they'll either have a braille terminal or some kind of text to speech device... I came across this bug when trying to find a bug about Mozilla playing: <EMBED src="http://www.3d69.be/UPP/NEWSLETTER/3d69.mp3" autostart=true hidden=true> as soon as I preview an email with that tag. This was a spam message BTW. I was hardly amused by this because it screwed up my WinAmp playlist and also because of the bufferoverflow bugs in several MP3 players. In theory this autoplay thing could be a great opportunity for virus writers :\ In short: IMO Mozilla should _not_ autoplay anything in email. We're not trying to become as virus prone as Outlook Express for example..
