The Mode_switch / dead-key workaround does not solve every possible case
so we need to have a release note explaining what options a user has.

Well, then you'll need to draft a release note and comment in bug 96484. :-)

This is a rather old bug. Reporter (Brian Stell), is this bug still
valid?

Brian Stell & Frank Tang, can either of you clarify what this bug is about?
When typing in a drop down (like during URL dropdown autocompletion) moz does
a keyboard grab.

There is an ancient bug in the X server that causes it to ignore that the mode
switch has been set so it is not possible enter characters that require the
compose key (some European accented chars).

The 'fix' was to ungrab the keyboard when the compose key is down.

This does not work for all cases (we really need to get the X server fixed).

See http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61439#c200 for a bit more info.
Can someone give me a rough idea of what, exactly, we want added to the release
notes? Brian's explanation is a bit too techie for me to extract exactly what
you want there.
[Unix and Linux] When typing with auto-complete (e.g. in the Location Bar), the
keyboard may become non-responsive when the mode switch (e.g. AltGr) is pressed.
To fix this, set the preference "autocomplete.grab_during_popup" to false. If
that does not work, click somewhere else and then return to continue typing.

can we have a more user-friendly term than "mode switch"

"(e.g. AltGr)"

What's AltGr? You mean the Alt key?

"To fix this, set the preference "autocomplete.grab_during_popup" to false."

In what file?

"If that does not work, click somewhere else and then [click back in the field]
to continue typing."

Okay?
> What's AltGr? You mean the Alt key?

the key used on German keyboards for umalets. I think we should assume those
affected knows what "mode switch" and "altGr" are. No need to explain to those
who are not affected.

> In what file?

To fix this, type <kbd>about:config</kbd> in the Location Bar. Locate the entry
<tt>autocomplete.grab_during_popup</tt> and set it to <tt>false</tt>.

(This only affects *nix, and *nix users aren't stuck with 1.0.x like Mac users
are, so no need to explain prefs.js for pre-1.4 releases... changing summary)

(autocomplete.grab_during_popup is set in unix.js, I'm sure it will show up and
there's no need to "create" it)

> field] to continue typing."

okay with me.
