see the testcase in bug 88260, if the w3c decides that our strict rendering is correct then the white strips should go away
The strips seem like the right thing to me.

David I think you are right but: .... The background set on an element in one of the layers will only be visible if the layers above it have a transparent background. .... The column's dont have a transparent background in this case, I keep this bug as a reminder, and will close it when the w3c will finally deliver a consistent specification. see target

whats the stuts on the w3c decision?
Using FizzillaCFM/2002071208, the background is white everywhere. None of the column background styles are applied.
