This is a request to include support for CDE features, e.g. drag&drop and file
type assignment and helper applications defined in CDE should be available from
within Mozilla.
One example would be that the mime-type text/xml is defined within the CDE
config. Then Mozilla can get help infos and possible helper-applications, which
should appear in a menu (e.g. helper applications/tools for this attachment for
current viewed page).

pushing this past beta
Mhhh, when will Menu's be hooked up ?
I investigated some simple ways how to support CDE 1.3 (under Solaris 7).
Very simple... rocks :-)
Maybe we should name this libMozCDE.so (and the KDE support libKDE.so) ??
Ping ! Any change here ?
No change. CDE is not a priority for beta.
If there's a CDE-concerned party that wants to
own this bug, I'm willing to help get that person started.
Which things are planned for CDE support beyond my ideas ?
Possibilities:
- tooltalk support (and the idea of a lightwheigt "apprunner" loading modules on
demand)
- drag&drop support
- tear-offs
- plaintext-editor uses CDE's texteditor widget
- helper-applications are taken from CDE's application database (Mozilla#s own
list may override these settings)
- ... (any ideas left ??)

Jim, this might be a good thing for HP/IBM to help drive.
I can't drive this one but can help with implementation
if needed. Please take a look.
Ping ! Small hint: I can help, too...

Roland, you filed this! If you can submit patches, by all means please do.
This bug just isn't a priority for internal Netscape people, most of
us don't run CDE. Jim's group probably does, that's why I bounced this
over to him.
maybe you can help me navigating througth Mozilla's source code.
1st CDE feature on my list is (because it doen't depend on Motif widgets) is CDE
helper support, e.g. use the CDE applicartion database to select a "helper"
application.
Where's the code which parses/processes ~/.mailcap files ?
Hi Roland, nice to meet you,
I'm the engineering manager for the Blackwood project
(http://www.mozilla.org/projects/blackwood/) and also recently got
responsibility for the Solaris port of Communicator 5.X. That means I'm
motivated to get CDE integration working.
My group would love to work with you. And if you actually have code to
contribute that would help the problem in a clean way, we'd strongly consider
it. Attach your patch(es) to this bug as a Bugzilla attachment! We'll code
review it and test it out. If you have a test case or test procedure, please
attach that as a separate attachment as well; that would help Sun QA and
Netscape QA more quickly verify your cool changes.
I'm making myself the responsible engineer until one of the other
Solaris/Communicator engineers here gets registered with a Bugzilla id.

Here comes my TO-DO list for the Solaris version for Mozilla >V4:
- Get Motif Toolkit working (to make CDE's DnD and other things happy)
- Get printing via libXp (e.g. Xprt) working - this is _independant_ from Motif
toolkit (current setup is that libXp code is only build in conjunction with the
Motif toolkit)
- Fixing clipboard issues (like current selected text in Mozilla can't be put
into dtpad via middle-mouse button)
- Getting DnD working, drop to view new URLs, drag into CDE's desktop (without
crashing CDE's dtfile -server, like the current Mozilla 4.7<->CDE1.3_dtfile
does - ahhgrrr...)
- Get "bookmark providers" (I filed already a BugZilla bug for this)
implemented to support CDE's style of bookmarks implemented.
- /var/mail (e.g. "Movemail") needs to be implemented - as many universities
are using /var/mail&&Mozilla 4.x (in traditional pop style (fetch messages from
/var/mail) and "new" imap stype (make references to /var/mail - to allow
concurrent use of dtmail, mozilla mail and /usr/ucb/from))...
- WE WANT WANT WANT tear-off menus :-)
- CDE-style skin...
- ... (and so on...)

Comments (HERE, please not via PM) very welcome...
Uppd, it forgot one "feature":
- ToolTips (localized !!)
Ahhgrr, Uppd == Upps
Gllww, seems I'm too tired now ;-(
Bookmarrk provider "RFE" as bugid 16959...
Any news here ?

Filed bug 30211 as a RFE to implement Xprt printing and added "depends on"
reference.
Depends on: 30211
No longer depends on: 30211
Why was the reference to 30211 removed (and who did this ?) ? AFAIK it was
related to my "CDE-ToDo-list..." postet here. I'd like to create RFEs on demand
for the items on the list and add the BugIDs to "depends on" (to keep this bug
as the meta/reference bug)...
Unix "tear-offs" are bug 7696. May I add a "depends on" reference without being
killed ?
"View Bug Activity" link shows that ftang did the removal of 30211 dependency.
Any _why_ removed ftang the reference ?

----

Question to the Sun people: Any people at HP which should be added to the CC ?
AFAIK CDE isn't a Sun/Solaris-only product... !?

Can someone verify that CDE DnD-API works for any widgets (Xt/Qt/Lesstif etc.)
or for Motif-widgets only ? Or should I write a test code ?
Roland, I suggest you take a break from this bug for 24 hours or so, collect
your thoughts, and put them in a single bug update message. You are generating
a lot of bug activity on this bug, and after a while, this bug will begin to
look like a distraction and nobody will take care of it.

To answer your question about whether any HP people should be CC'd: I have no
idea.

Sorry, no new summary yet, only some items more on the CDE/Solaris integration
list - please (e.g. the Sun people) take a look at bug 30684 ("Custom values in
vcard" - like "X-Sun-Calendar" for the CDE calender (dtcm)).
New on the ToDo list for CDE (for Solaris):
- sdtname stores personal vCards in ~/.dt/Addresses/ - we need an "interface"
which can read/write/search this directory and the system cards, too (take a
look at "[Bug 30685] New - RFE: Addressbook provider support...").

Milestone 0.8 has been released. We should either resolve this bug or update its
milestone.
Updating milestone to Mozilla 1.0.

Helper application support is very simple... not hard - only work. Need someone
from TOG/Sun/HP who has some time (5 emails/week... sherry ?) and check-in
permissions.

DND support depends either if Sun will support XDND support in their (broken...
=:-) Motif 2.x port or if we spend more time in the Xlib toolkit port or if we
re-work the Motif toolkit support in Mozilla (this means: delete old files in
motif/ tree and copy Xlib files from Xlib toolkit, then add missing features
(DND, Clipboard (incomplete in current Xlib), Selection support and so on... -
not hard... only work... :-)).
Target Milestone: M18 → mozilla1.0
Bugs targeted at mozilla1.0 without the mozilla1.0 keyword moved to mozilla1.0.1

Roland, why don't you take this bug?
A CDE-caring person needs to work on this, I don't want to trade
core mozilla.org/Netscape cycles to fix this. Trudelle, I suggest giving
this to Roland (the filer, if he agrees) or somehow marking
help wanted.
I would take it if there would be any chance to get the code into the tree
before 1.0 - which seems to be impossible with the current bottleneck in getting
superreviews...
Why does 1.0 have anything to do with your taking it? We sure aren't going to
do anything with it before then, if ever.
->Roland.Mainz@informatik.med.uni-giessen.de.  Roland, I can't promise SR
attention by 1.0, but I've got several of them on my team, and I can at least
get your patch on their radar.

Is this still active,h as there been any change? Is this bug still here? And,
finaly, is this bug still looking for a QA as in the Keywords?
I'm not so certain that this is needed anymore. Solaris is working their way
onto Gnome, it would be more worthwhile to move toward that direction and
thereby consolidate with Linux at the same time.

I've not used Gnome myself (in fact I use CDE on Solaris 8 most of the time ;)
but I can attest that Mozilla/Solaris is fine as-is in the CDE environment.

I recommend that we WONTFIX this bug. It's been sitting here for ? 5 years with not a single patch.
I offered to help CDE people do something here and .. it didn't happen for whatever reason.
Let's spend time on other bugs.
So is this a WONTFIX?
