I have a feeling this is because unlike threads, sort groups are always dynamically rebuilt on every refresh? I currently have "gFolderDisplay.view.refresh()" for F6 "Refresh Virtual Folder" keybinding, which is a lifesaver and deserves a bug on its own, but it causes all groups to always unfold.
Looking through about:config there seems to be nothing applicable searching "group", "collapse", "thread". Feels like it oughta be a boolean pref to auto-unfold all sort groups.

Manually unfolding these after every refresh sucks :/

I think yes. That bug lacks clear description, but lightning seems no longer necessary part of STR. Its also quite popular with continuous inflow of dupes...
