As per comment 1: it depends, do you want Bengali from Bengal (bn-BD) or Bengali from India (bn-IN)?
We've asked time and again during various discussions about this - but never got an answer.
I suspect you want Bengali from India though.
But yeah: you've got Bengali from Bengal (bn-BD)

Hi James, this seems like a bad bug in that we want BD-IN ( bug 1007216 )

Hi,Naoki
Should I change the bn-BD into bn-IN ?

According to what the Marketplace has, I think so. I am still waiting word from Steven about this. I just want to make sure that we are all on the same page.

Hi,James
From bug 1012799 ,it seems that we should use bn-IN.
In https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/gaia-l10n/v1_4/bn-IN/ ,the bn-IN seems on v1.4.
Do we need to modify bn-BD into bn-IN ?If not,the Marketplace may wrongly displays.

Hi,Keven
First,I should get the bn-IN language package under gaia-l10n.Usually we config it under manifest.xml like this:
<project name="l10n/bn-BD/gaia" path="gaia-l10n/bn-BD" remote="mozillaorg" revision="v1.3" />
Can we acess bn-IN which is in v1.4 ?

I don't really agree with comment 14. Just FYI: as you can see from Transvision tool that compares bn-BD and bn-IN, these locales are not the same http://transvision-beta.mozfr.org/3locales/?recherche=the&repo=gaia&sourcelocale=en-US&locale=bn-BD&locale2=bn-IN&search_type=strings
FWIW: bn-IN exists and is complete in 1.4, but it's still being tested by community

We were discussing the differences between bn-IN and bn-BD during our l10n workweek recently.
Just for confirmation and to be able to evaluate things correctly, adding Arky, Mak (bn-ND localizer) and Biraj (bn-IN localizer) in CC

IMHO, bn-BD and bn-IN don't have much differences, we speak same language with different dialect based on the different region/social group throughout the greater Bengal region.

After discussing with James ,we think it's better if you modify on the server side with some location information .
Maybe it's more reasonable to use the location information for deciding which language you should use. Such as ,if you detect that you are in Bangladesh ,you should use bn-BD;but if you are in India ,you might should use bn-IN.
I think it's not proper that you use bn-IN for Bengali just because the target market is India.
Just imagine a scenario like this :I am an Indian ,but I set English as the phone's language,then which language should you choose for marketplace ,Bengali or English ?
I'm not sure how this will work with switching. I believe we rely on the bn-IN/bn-BD input for the l10n to make sure we switch to the right language? Maybe I am wrong. ie if the phone is set to bn-BD and the marketplace is set to bn-IN, it will not switch over to bn-IN and default to English.

That is correct, and is also correct for every website the user will visit on the phone. If you want to use the bn-BD translations for bn-IN they should be copied into the bn-IN localization files and pushed into the build.

per discussion with Steven, for Bengali in India, it's bn-IN
if you choose English in India, it's en-IN
so we should use bn-IN

We can agree only adding bn-IN but don't agree changing translation now.
For example, 'en-IN' 'en-US' using same translation, and 'bn-IN' 'bn-BD' using same translation.

Hi,Joe
Since we have tested bn-BD for a period of time ,so to be honest ,we don't want change it to bn-IN .But on your side ,you use bn-IN for marketplace,to solve this issue,maybe there two ways:
1,Modify bn-In to bn-BD on your side ,that means you use bn-Bn for marketplace.This is a simple resolution.
2,We only add the name tag bn-IN ,but keep the bn-BD translation ,because we haven't tested the bn-IN translation .Just like comment #32 said.
If you don't agree on the method 1,do you agree on method 2 ?

This is not a Marketplace bug or a Marketplace fix. You're talking about the language the phone will request from every website it visits not just the Marketplace app. I don't speak the language, but if bn-IN and bn-BD are different enough to be debated for 34 comments, this should be fixed on the device or people will get the wrong language when they click around the internet.

To be clear regarding comment 33, I do not think we should do #1 and I think #2 is a last resort.
For English speakers, the closest comparison I can make is something like en-US vs en-GB where most of it is similar but s's are z's and there are extra u's and "I'm on vacation and forgot my cell phone" becomes "I'm on holiday and forgot my mobile." It's localized - it fits the region. How awkward it would be with one or the other only someone familiar with the language and both regions could say.

Since Tarako is based on v1.3,but there is no v1.3 version for bn-IN,I had to use bn-IN on v1.4.
After I compare bn-BD on v1.3 with bn-IN on v1.4,they are not the same actually,some of the l10n-id are different between the two.So we may use #2 in comment #33 ,and in that situation we modify the following two files:
#File 1:manifest.xml:
<project name="l10n/bn-BD/gaia" path="gaia-l10n/bn-BD" remote="mozillaorg" revision="sprdb2g_v1.3t" />
change it to:
<project name="l10n/bn-BD/gaia" path="gaia-l10n/bn-IN" remote="mozillaorg" revision="sprdb2g_v1.3t" />
#File 2:/device/sprd/sp6821a_gonk/languages.json
"bn-BD" : "বাংলা (বাংলাদেশ)"
change it to:
"bn-IN" : "বাংলা (ভারত)"

Yang,
1. I am not sure if there is any difference between the term used in bn-IN and bn-BD. May be you can get more info from your colleague whose native tongue is Bengali.
2. Yes, I think the correct country name should used.
"বাংলা (বাংলাদেশ)" ---> Bengali (Bangladesh)
"বাংলা (ভারত)" ---> Bengali (India)
3. Need to use bn-IN in prod_sp6821a.mk, because bn-IN will install more fonts than bn-BD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengali_language has a write-up on the origins and differences of bengali dialects. Can we get a few people to comment on the accuracy of that, and expand on which of the dialects are used/supported in the two bengali versions that we have?
In particular this passage was interesting to me:
>
During the standardization of Bengali in the 19th century and early 20th century, the cultural center of Bengal was in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata), founded by the British. What is accepted as the standard form today in both West Bengal and Bangladesh is based on the West-Central dialect of Nadia District, located next to the border of Bangladesh.[41] There are cases where speakers of Standard Bengali in West Bengal will use a different word from a speaker of Standard Bengali in Bangladesh, even though both words are of native Bengali descent. For example, the word salt is নুন nun in the west which corresponds to লবণ lôbôn in the east.[42]
>
It would also be good to outline the regions and cities where this version is intended to be sold and marketed.
From there we could all understand how good of a match we have between the localizations and the areas where phones might be sold.
Also, there has been talk of creating en-IN localizations on desktop and Mozilla products but I'm unaware of any work toward producing it.

But bn-IN doesn't have a v1.3 version while Tarako is based on v1.3.What do you think about how to resolve this issue ,per comment 1.

Hi all,
Thanks Yang to provide opt #1 and #2 in comment 33, however, i guess both opt is not doable.
if FT team feedback there is no diff between bn-BD and bn-IN, i would say let's check if partner(s) accept it. I sent an email to Neeraj to confirm this.
meantime, we do need to think about backup plan, either to evaluate effort / time for new translation of bn-IN and keyboard layout or any possibility to leverage from others.

Hi Wil,
There are two things we have consensus now,
1. SPRD India's BD confirmed with customers that bn-BD is acceptable for India
2. But for the 1st wave (targeting Jul, 2014), Moz can only provide English, Hindi and Tamil for India.
Hi James,
As discussed in call last week,
1. We do NOT prefer / allow to change bn-BD to bn-IN directly due to risk mentioned in comment 35 by Wil.
2. If there is REQ for 1st wave requires bn-IN, we need to schedule / file another bug to track bn-IN readiness. currently Tarako provide bn-BD.
thanks for your help and coordination James!

Ok. Please note the Marketplace is not localized into bn-BD as of now so offering it on device will also need lead time and a new package from the Marketplace.
