User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:32.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/32.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20140523030202 Steps to reproduce: Install Thunderbird (24.5.0) on Windows 8.1. Setup access to mail box, in this case IMAP to two gmail accounts and IMAP to a third account on a remote server. Turned off scan email attachments in McAfee. Actual results: When Thunderbird retrieves mail, it will hang for some period of time. It will recover and come back. Expected results: The long hangs should not happen.

Please define/give a number of minutes to "some period of time". Also, ... Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode Does problem go away?

Started Windows 8.1 in Safe Mode. The delay that is typical when it first starts up is gone. This delay can be measured in either ten's of seconds or minutes depending on the speed of the connection. It is querying 3 IMAP accounts and one POP3 account that does not accumulate any email as the messages are forwarded to one of the IMAP accounts. Did not start Thunderbird in safe mode. Usually when it queries the email accounts, Thunderbird will stop responding and will return once all of the queries have been completed. Right now the machine is configured with McAfee LiveSafe and the Real-time Scanning is disabled. This implies that the McAfee Real-time Scanning is the problem.
