If you deselect Mozilla to be the default email client, when you launch Mozilla again, there is no dialog prompting the user to select Mozilla Mail to be the default email client. DIRECTIONS: 1. Launch Mozilla for the 1st time and select Mozilla to be the default email client. 2. Then go to Edit|Preferences|Mail & Newsgroups and deselect Mozilla Mail to be the default and close Mozilla. 3. Launch Mozilla again. RESULT: No dialog box displayed to request the user to select Mozilla to be the default. EXPECTED: This should always be displayed everytime the user launches Mozilla and Mozilla is not the default email client. Outlook Express behaves this way and should be the correct way.

We are aware of this and we will need to do this but for the next release. For this partial simple mapi release we have decided to go with the option to select Mozilla as default mail client from Preferences and when Mail is accessed.

Bug 102570 should not be dependent on this bug, if it is not planned for this landing.

I actually think we shouldn't ask every time. I think what outlook does in that regard is intrusive =). In any case, I agree with rajiv that this should be a minus so I'll add that.

i would agree with kevin here. we currently display the default dialog prompt only when the mail client is launched, which is proper. prompting the default email dialog when a user launches the browser is like prompting the user to select Excel as their default spreadsheet app when they launch Word. Both have ties to each other but that shouldn't be the reason to imply the user should decide at that time.

I want to make sure I understand this bug. In this scenario, when mail is launched then we do prompt but not when the browser is launched? If that's the case, then I think we should wontfix this. I think we should prompt when a mail related window is opened but we don't need to do it when only the browser is used.

Scott, your understanding is right When a mail related window is opened we get the dialog but not when the browser is opened. Marking this as wont fix based on scott's comment
