The word "reset" was chosen when we first launched this feature and it did indeed reset and delete many things. Over time we've kept the repair ability of the feature while saving more and more of your critical information. We want to make this option discoverable for users and now need a name that is less scary, more appropriate and helps users choose the right time to use it.

About a year ago we had a short brainstorming in irc:
madhava: verdi: thought experiment for you
verdi: madhava: go!
madhava: what would be an even more user-compelling name for reset firefox
madhava: I don't think can have a "Fix Firefox!" or "Don't suck [on/off]"
shorlander: Fix it Firefox
madhava: but what would lead people to the right choices about when to use it
verdi: ha! That's a hard one. Repair Firefox
madhava: while still seeming friendly
verdi: Restore Firefox - but that has connotations similar to reset
madhava: like setting your oven to self-clean
madhava: de-gunk the works
madhava: Firefox Draino
madhava: wouldn't be good for a firefox, probably
verdi: :)
verdi: Auto Repair
verdi: with a wrench icon!
madhava: spring cleaning
madhava: auto-repair -- there's something to that
madhava: Firefox Self-heal
verdi: madhava: yes - something about the automaticness
verdi: it does it for you
madhava: descale the tubes
verdi: madhava: self-repair
dolske: "Please state the nature of the Firefox emergency."

For reference IE, Chrome and Safari all call it reset but their versions are somewhat more destructive. The documentation for our feature is here - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-fix-most-problems We also plan to have it deactivate and save your add-ons and their data instead of deleting them (Bug 1017919).

Windows 8 now has something called "Refresh." Go to PC Settings > Update and recovery > Recovery and you get an option to "Refresh your PC without affecting your files."

This name would show up in a number of places. Currently it's on about:support and it's in the infobars you see when starting Firefox for the first time in more than 60 days and after a slow startup. We'd like to add it as an option in the help menu (Bug 872241) and when re-installing the same version of Firefox you already have (Bug 750979, Bug 1027318, http://people.mozilla.org/~mverdi/mockups/reset/reset2014v2.pdf).
Hi Michael,

Thanks for filing this. I could have sworn I already came up with a bunch of options to replace Reset Firefox at some point, but I can't find the bug. Maybe it was just an email thread, but if so, that's probably long gone by now.

Could you give me an idea of timing and process on this (i.e. who will need to review and approve the new name)?

Thanks.
Hi Matej,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. There are a bunch of related reset things I'm trying to do in Q3 - https://wiki.mozilla.org/User_Education/Firefox_Reset_2014 and it would be helpful to make this change at the same time. There's no deadline like, this string is moving to Aurora next week or something but I'm hoping for Firefox 34 at the latest. 33 would be awesome and is still on nightly for about 4 weeks. I would imagine that at least Madhava and Chad would want to review and approve though I'm not sure who else normally handles these things.

Thanks, Michael. Do you want to find some time to chat about this at the offsite next week?

Sounds good. Thanks.

Thanks Matej! Refresh has grown on me. I also like Repair. Let's see what Madhava thinks.

Wait! That's me!

My top three:
- Refresh Firefox
- Tune Up Firefox --> I really like this idea but the actual phrase is a little cumbersome
- Auto-heal Firefox

Is this still undecided? Verdi posted a spec in bug 1062345 that mentions this bug but suggests "Refresh Firefox."

This is still undecided. Madhava can you help?

"Madhava Firefox"
OK.

"Refresh Firefox" still seems like the best contender to me, so long as we never say just "Refresh" in the browser (which has another different function). I don't think we're causing any terrible conceptual collisions here.

I hear from mverdi that Microsoft is calling a similar feature for Windows "refresh" as well, so that may help us out here.

Let's go with that unless anyone has a better suggestion.

Done. Marking REFRESHED.
