Hi, We received a report on SUMO around the week of June 16th, that update notifications for apps in the Marketplace are not being received. Since then, I have attempted to download and test apps, while waiting for update notifications to appear, but have not received an update notification for any of the apps I downloaded on any of my devices. I was hoping that other teams may be able to investigate and see if there is an issue with app updates. (App updates only. System updates are OK) DEVICES TESTED: LG Fireweb v1.1 ZTE Open C v1.3 Flame v1.3,v2.1 Geeksphone v1.3 Tarako v1.3T APPS DOWNLOADED: 8Tracks AfterEffects ConnectA2 Downtube Eight Ball Champion Facebook Firefly Game Goal Live Score Goal.com Grooveshark LocMap OpenWapp Orbland ROLL IT Sketchbook Squad Soundcloud Swiper Text Editor Track guide Twitter Wikipedia X-Type Yelp zMaps Please let me know if there are any questions. I tried updating an installed packaged app on my hamachi with 1.4(latest) and it worked fine.

Hi Krupa, Thanks for the clarification on the difference of packaged vs. hosted for those apps. I installed them roughly 2 weeks ago and have not received any update notification. Which app did you install? You received a notification for an update and the update process was successful? I'm hoping that I can replicate your steps and verify the update notification before reporting back to the SUMO team. I'll also note that none of the commercially available devices have version 1.4 in them yet, but I'm not sure if this makes a difference in receiving update notifications. Thanks again for your help! =) - Ralph

Can you list an example of one or more packaged apps that should have been updated? If you can put the version you first installed and the newest version that should have been installed then we could maybe investigate this. You may also want to check your logcat to see if there are any errors communicating with the update service. Also check your data/wifi connection which obviously might slow down updates.

Hi Kumar, I just spoke with Guillermo Movia and he mentioned experiencing this issue specifically on the ZTE Open C v1.3 device, with the OpenWapp packaged app. I'm adding him to needinfo so that he may help us with more details. I didn't list examples of packaged apps initially because I didn't know specifics of this issue, so I was initially hoping to find out more information, or ways of testing for it. Thanks again for your help, - Ralph

Hi @Kumar, just to confirmed whay Ralph wrote. Usin ZTE Open C bought at Ebay US, I didn't receive any update notification from Marketplace. I had to uninstall and re install the app to have the new version. OpenWapp and Telegram were tested.

On prod, i uploaded a test app and updated it. The update showed up on my phone as expected. on dev, I did the following 1. Upload Telegram(from prod) version 0.2 as the test app and approve it 2. Install on your phone 3. Update the app to 0.2.1 and approve the update 4. Check for updates on your phone

(In reply to Guillermo Movia [:deimidis] from comment #8) > @Krupa which phone are you using for those test? I see is a Firefox OS 2.0 > > My problem is with 1.3 on ZTE Open C bought in Ebay I have also tried on 1.3 for updates. I don't have a ZTE Open C on me right now. I'll check on Monday to see if it is a device-specific issue.

I believe is device-specific. They create another app for updates, so I believe they change something in the marketplace

Hi, I have the same problem with Stock 1.3 with ZTE Open C. I must say that ZTE has created his own app for updating the device instead of using Gecko's own. They also ripped off the option in the Settings app, so you cannot force check for updates. If you go to the marketplace and install an app, and it does have updates in the future, you need to go back again to the page and install the updated. This is so bad for Open C users.

Hi, I've got a Flame (FFOS v1.3) and I've installed Openwapp v1.3.2. Now there is an Openwapp 1.4 but I'm not receiving updates reminders and System Update checking tell my system is updated ;-)

Hi, I've tested it. Though the menu item "check now" of settings app has been masked on OPEN C device, this device can receive the notification message of third apps every 24 hours if there is new version app in the Marketplace.

Ok, so I have never received any update notification for a Marketplace app on my ZTE Open C despite there definitely being updates available. I have now done a bit more investigation and hacked together a small certified app that just triggers "gaia.system.checkForUpdates" - and a few seconds after triggering that action I got a notification about 7 updates for Marketplace apps being available. So to me it looks like the backend functionality is working, but the front-end functionality is just disabled on the ZTE Open C firmware. I'll clean up my hack a bit and make it available for others to test if anyone is interested...

In bug 1044225 comment 7, I concluded that there has not been an update to the Marketplace package since April 22. I have not received a response from people I've needinfo'd. But I think that's what's going on here.

Ah, disregard comment 16. It looks like the behaviour you're describing is for apps downloaded *from* the Marketplace, not necessarily the Marketplace itself.

I have now made my simple CheckUpdate app available at http://svn.cmeerw.net/src/CheckUpdate/trunk/ - this will need t obe installed via Firefox's App Manager to a locally connected phone. Could someone who is affected by this bug give this application a try and see if it fixes the problem (by triggers application updates)?

On ZTE OpenC, using a cusom build of 2.2.0.0-prerelease (variant=user) I do have update notifications. I don't recall any such notification on stock version 1.3.

(In reply to Christof Meerwald from comment #18) > Could someone who is affected by this bug give this application a try and > see if it fixes the problem (by triggers application updates)? It work like advertised: I get an application update notification a few seconds after your CheckUpdate application's check. Thank you very much! For the ones who try to install this application, you need to download the files from the Christof's SVN (svn checkout http://svn.cmeerw.net/src/CheckUpdate/trunk/ for example) as certified application cannot be installed as an hosted application (by providing the manifest URL to the Firefox's App Manager).

Where should I copy /trunk files? How can I execute this app?
Comment 22•10 years ago

Get the files on your computer (certified apps cannot be installed as hosted app, it seems), and use the Firefox's App Manager to install it on your phone (more info on https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Using_the_App_Manager). Open the app on your phone and you will be able to check new version of yours installed apps. Procedure in French on https://diaspora-fr.org/posts/673225.

Then, it's necessary intall App Manager on my linux! I think it's easy, for a end user like me, wait for next FOS release 1.4? 2.1?
Comment 24•10 years ago

The App Manager is a feature of Firefox. If you already have Firefox, you already have the Firefox's App Manager. Anyway, if you need some help on installing the CheckUpdate app, you can contact me by email, as this bug is not the perfect place for this. As about waiting for an upgrade, this bug is about the ZTE Open C, and ZTE is not even sure to provide major update of FirefoxOS on this device...

Hi Bonbadil, I've already write you an email message for App Manager stuff (I'm using Firefox 24 and that's why I have not App Manager :-( But you said this bug is about ZTE Open C, and it's not true, because I have this bug too, and I'm using a Flame. Thanks a lot.

App Manager is replaced by WebIDE in Firefox 33+. It basically adds features on top of App Manager so you should be fine.

Users of Debian Stable have Firefox 24, and it has not App Manager nor WebIDE. Debian stability has these counterparts :-) Nevermind, I can wait for FFOS or Debian updates! And I hope FFOS update be soon than Debian one!! :-D

My bad, I read 34 an not 24. You can install 31 from testing.
I think the problem for this may be because of gaia.system.checkForUpdates being set to false by default. bug 879192 has some background, bug 1148257 is following up on why this is set false for user/userdebug builds. It's a gaia issue.
