I did a critical upgrade to IE 5.5 browser as per Micro$oft recommendations in a
critical update notice. IE made itself the default browser again, without even
asking. Very rude in my opinion, but typical of Micro$oft.
I can?t find a way to make Mozilla my default browser again. Maybe I am just
missing it but I can?t find it in preferences. I think that Mozilla should
notice that its rightful place as my default browser has been taken away and
offer me the opportunity to restore it as my default browser. Then I wouldn?t
even need to search for a setting to do it myself.

Try Edit -> Preferences menu. Advanced, then System. You can set the file types
and protocols that Mozilla should handle and I believe it defaults to watching
when they have been snagged by another application.

Under Edit/preferences/advanced/system you can choose which Files mozilla should
handle.
There is also a checkbox: []Alert me if other Applications change these settings.
This must be checked and this is working for me. (win2k 20011004..)
marking worksfome !
Please reopen if you have enabled the checkbox. And then poste your build ID
(Please include in every bug report the build ID)

Mozilla 0.9.4
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.4) Gecko/20010913
That checkbox was checked and is still checked and IE was able to take over as
default browser. I am not able to get Mozilla back as my default browser. I
imagine installing it again might do it but I haven't tried that yet.

In addition to the "Alert me" checkbox, you need to also check the appropriate
boxes for file types and protocols. Are any of those checked?
All boxes were checked. Other than e-mail and some 'Appearance' settings I
believe I haven't changed any of the default settings.

I believe this is a major bug as it is probably having a direct and quite
significant impact on our market share now that Microsoft auto-upgrade
IE, if the default is indeed changed when IE is updated.

Please note that some of these will hopefully be fixed in the course of fixing
bug 59078. I just can't commit to fixing them all.

After installing the last critical update to IE 5.5, I upgraded to IE 6 only to
have the latest (just in case). I am running Moz 0.9.8 build 2002021803 on
Win98SE, and I can't make it my default browser. During the install, Mozilla
asks whether I want it to be the default, and I click the YES button, but it's
to no avail.
I even went to the prefs.js file after closing Mozilla, and changing the
following to read, thusly: user_pref("browser.wfe.ignore_def_check", false),
thinking that this would cause Mozilla to ask again the next time it was
started. It didn't.

I'm running Mozilla 0.9.8 on Windows NT4 and have installed it as not my default
browser.
Every time I open Mozilla it regsiters itself as the default browser and the
default mail manager, even though I have not set these options in the preferences.
e.g. I can open mozilla, then open outlook, and outlook will request if I want
to register it as my default browser. At the end of the day I log out, then the
next day the same thing happens, always.
As I am forced to use certain software at the office, it is an annoyance to have
the request coming up all the time, and to have to open my programs in a
specific order. However the functionlity of IE is not good enough, hence mozilla.

This bug should be resolved as INVALID. These seem to be faults on
the side of Microsft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook, not
Mozilla. Reporter and everyone who have similar problem, please go
to MSIE and Outlook's preferences and uncheck the options for
automatically checking if they are the default browsers.
