I started exploring this while working on bug 1046485, and Eric noticed that deactivating the search bar causes the keyboard to hide, which makes the expanding card animation stutter if it's happening at the same time.

I'm filing this bug because it's part of the design, but we may need to explore alternatives if the keyboard hiding is giving us perf problems.
P1 to investigate changing the sequence of events here, but we can punt on this if it's too hard to get it right.
Priority: -- → P1
This could be a nice refinement, but the sequence of events of this animation hasn't bothered me while using the search activity, so I don't think this is a P1. I would even be tempted to WONTFIX it if there's no good way to get around the performance issues with hiding the keyboard.
