Reduce new tab performance impact by only attempting to show 5 columns (from 8)
Bug 1026561 comment 50 notes 5-15% tp5o regression when switching to 8 columns. We can get some of that back by only trying to show 5 columns as that's within 1 column of what ~75% of users should see.

The "browser.newtabpage.columns" pref is set to 5 by default on Windows 7 64bit, Ubuntu 14.04 and Mac OS X 10.9 using latest Nightly, build ID: 20140820030202. Marking issue verified.
