Steps to reproduce:

Hi there, 

This is actually not a bug but a feature request. 

I was thinking of an automatic detection of the network mode. 

Thunderbird could detect if there is no connection available and ask the user whether he want to switch to offline mode. This detection could be made an optional setting in the preferences.
