Actual results:
Top bar is corrupted. The standard 3 windows buttons (Minimise close etc) are not visible. Though their function is still there
Expected results:
I should have had the standard windows interface with the 3 buttons in the top right corner of the Thunderbird window. See attached jpg
Restarted Thunderbird in Safe mode and the three windows buttons are there and the interface looks normal. However when I close then restart Thunderbird the issue is back. I think the dark (Black rectangle as visible in the jpg)area is masking the 3 buttons. If I hover my mouse over the area I can see a change in the underlying colour as the mouse passes over each buttons masked position.
Also If I Disable Desktop composition in the Thunderbird properties page it runs just fine. So to me there is an issue with the Aero interface with Thunderbird 31.1.0
furthermore all fonts in both messages and screen elements are not sharp ... wheter running in Aero or not. Switching between Thunderbird and Firefox illustrates this clearly. There is something seriously wrong with the 31.1.0 version of Thunderbird.
running in SAFE mode and appearance is normal, fonts are sharp and crisp, all windows elements are present. Be nice if as a temporary workaround I could launch Thunderbird in SAFE mode without have to manually do this .... or revert back to the previous version ... though I am worried I will loose Emails and Address books if I do this ?

Version 31 via bug 950133 reenables HWA - graphics acceleration.
Blocks: 950133
Component: OS Integration → Mail Window Front End
Keywords: regression
Summary: Upgraded to Thunderbird 31.1.0 on Win 7 64Bit. Upper menu bar that contains Minimise,Close buttons is corrupted. these 3 standard windows buttons are no longer present, though there touch areas are there. → Upgrade to Thunderbird 31.1.0 on Win 7 64Bit - Aero causes corrupted Minimise,Close buttons in title bar and fonts in both messages and screen elements/characters are not sharp
Would the suggestion here fix this issue ?:
http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-hardware-acceleration-gpu-rendering-in-mozilla-firefox-4-0-to-fix-font-problem/
i.e>
Disable Hardware Acceleration in Firefox and Thunderbird Using about:config
If you can't follow above mentioned steps, try following alternative method:
1. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter.
Thunderbird users will need to go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced menu and then click on "Config Editor" button.
It'll ask for confirmation, click on I'll be careful, I promise! button.
2. Now look for following 2 preferences:
gfx.direct2d.disabled
layers.acceleration.disabled
3. Both preferences would be set to false. Double-click on both of them and it'll change their values to true.
That's it. Restart the program and it'll turn hardware acceleration feature off.
Just updated to 31.1.1 and the bug is still there ! Any help in solving this issue ?

ttail, please can you try this: Open the Options window go to Advanced/General. Now click on "Config Editor..." and confirm with pressing the button. Now enter in search field gfx.direct2d.disabled. In the list double-click now on this entry, it will be become bold now. Close TB and restart it.
You could also try other graphic driver versions but the way I wrote above should be the easiest.
Is it now as it should be?

I think Invalid is more appropriate. However, it may be nice to know if an updated driver helps the user.
ttail,
there is a newer driver available. Can you install it, reenable HWA and tell us if problem is gone?
"GeForce 344.11 Driver - WHQL
Version: 344.11 - Release Date: Thu Sep 18, 2014"
