Despite the setTimeout, if the swf is small then a blink/webkit based browser cannot parse the fontface before shumway uses it. I attached an example swf, which renders the unicode squares instead of the embedded custom font in Chrome.

This should at least be much better now. We're still not using the font loading API, but we at least wait for a while at the right moment, and haven't seen any intermittent issues around this in quite a while.
