I'm investigating the use of more than one Arabic version on the long term in Firefox OS.
For example: allowing the user to choose between "Arabic (Tunisia)" and "Arabic (Egypt)" where "Arabic (Tunisia)" will cover the differences of Arabic in North Africa (e.g. the use of Western Arabic numerals[1] instead of the Eastern Arabic numerals[2]) and "Arabic (Egypt)" covers the language differences in the Middle East (e.g. the use of the Eastern Arabic numerals).
Another difference is the months names[3].
All of the above is not so hard to implement since it's a matter of dividing the locale and adding language-specific strings.

However the tricky part is maybe implementing a complete language-specific calendar system (and letting the user manually change the calendar system pref if they don't a certain one to be used with a certain Arabic variation).

As far as I know Android uses the same approach and a little search in Google revealed this bug[4] for Android which suggests actually having 11 variations of the Arabic language. Not sure about iOS neither how WP does this.

I'm interesting in any possible feedback concerning this.
