Keeping them active can get them into some funky states. See also bug 960746 which might solve this issue.
We disable forward while animating (as of bug 1086981) and I don't think hitting back while animating should be a problem (the back action will get queued and when it actually runs, then the forward button will reappear). Fixing bug 960746 should likely solve any remaining issues. Marking as dupe to the fixing bug.
