Keeping them active can get them into some funky states.

See also bug 960746 which might solve this issue.
We disable forward while animating (as of bug 1086981) and I don't think hitting back while animating should be a problem (the back action will get queued and when it actually runs, then the forward button will reappear).

Fixing bug 960746 should likely solve any remaining issues.
