When watching youtube the playback will frequently stop. The video typically shows a significant amount of buffering ahead like the next minute. I don't have exact STR but it happens somewhat frequently. It happens on this WebM VP9 video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sdyxd0LsL1I#t=10
Jumping backwards in time seems to reproduce the problem with just a few tries. When I switch to chrome the video plays fine. I'm not experience internet congestion or any out of the normal packet drops.

No response yet on the bug. Chris is this a known issues? I've been unable to reliably use youtube on mac lately because of this bug and bug 1089048.

What version of Firefox are you using? In current Nightly builds MSE is enabled, which has some known issues.

I'm using 36.0a1 (2014-11-03) and I've been seeing it for a least a week or possibly longer.
[Tracking Requested - why for this release]:
If this isn't a dupe then we should track this. This bug makes watching 5+ mins video nearly impossible. I've been having to switch to another browser to watch Youtube.

Does the patch in bug 1089937 fix the issue for you?

The patch conflict isn't trivially rebaseable without more domain knowledge.

No. I'm still seeing this quite a bit.
Can confirm this with mediasource enabled in the latest Nightly 37.0a1 (2014-12-22) on Fedora Linux 21
Video URL - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7Q-1KIDWGc
The video becomes static after 9 sec. I even have the clip fully buffered/loaded.
Forgot to add the sound continues to play even after the video is frozen.
On @BenWa's link i was able to reproduce the same error, and also after closing the tab with the video, audio continued to play for sometime.

Audio continuing to play while video freezes sounds like bug 1120550.
Probably the original report was with vp9 in MSE? But sounds like it's reproducible with mp4.
Depends on: 1120550

Ralph, sorry about the ping on this but what are your plans about this bug? beta 5 gtb is today.

Ok, trying to sort out what evidence we have here. Original report was 36 nightly, and on Mac assuming the platform autofill was correct. That would be WebM+MSE, which is now turned off in 36, and should no longer be affected.
In comment #7 Bull500 reports reproducing on 37 nightly on Linux. Linux doesn't have MSE, so this is non-MSE webm, or maybe non-MSE mp4 if they have non-free codecs installed. That implies a problem with regular <video> playback which would affect users on Linux and Windows XP for 36. I think I was confused about 'reproducible with mp4' in comment #10.
Bull, are you still seeing this? If so can you select 'stats for nerds' from the right-click menu and report the codecs and DASH field values?
I'll take a look and see if I can track this down in the next couple of days, but realistically I don't expect we'll be able to fix this for 36.

Add MSE tracking since this might affect with WebM fallback where we don't support MSE.

well the playback stuck while buffering continues seems to have gone with Nightly 38.0a1 (2015-01-28)(Fedora 21)
But it seems that the video link by :BenWa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sdyxd0LsL1I#t=10 had trouble buffering after a certain point.
I've tried returning the slider to its initial point and letting it play to if it continues but the buffering seems to be stuck(Screenshot attached)

I don't think we can fix it, but I'm concerned this will be a regression if we can't get youtube to prefer flash for 36. Anthony, can you comment?

We should disable WebM MSE support in nightly for now. Ralph - can you do that?

It's already disabled for Mac and Windows in Nightly. Are you worried about Linux? Android?

I think bug 1130720 might be a duplicate of this. On Linux, I also see playback stopping after a few seconds on youtube with webm vp9 videos, which is a pretty big issue now that youtube has activated html5 player by default.

I've started feeling that YouTube is serving much more vp9 videos than in the past.
Im constantly changing browsers for video playback.

Youtube is going to switch back to flash for 36, so, wontfix for 36 but tracking for 37.

Can you confirm that you tested in a current Nightly 39 build? As bug 1125469 was uplifted to 37 and 38, I'd also like to confirm that this issue has been fixed in Beta and Aurora. Are you willing to test in current Beta and Aurora builds as well?

I've been experiencing quite a few problems with YouTube VP9 on nightly 39 on Fedora 21. Last tested March 1,2015
Video and audio sync is completely going bonkers - the video streams fine enough, but the audio starts over from a previous time frame.
Very rarely - but noticed the audio issue in a loop
This happens when the video is yet to buffered, or when there is a in video pop-up ad, or an ad before the video starts playing.

As per Anthony's comment in bug 1135558, 37 is now unaffected as WebM was only enabled for Aurora/Nightly by the RELEASE_BUILD flag.
