Details
I don't have consistent STR, but recently (last couple of weeks) if I run Thunderbird long enough, eventually I have problems switching between IRC channels. The channel is highlighted in the channel list, but the chat pane doesn't update to the newly selected channel.

Are there any errors in the Error Console that seem related? What version of Thunderbird are you running? Thanks!

That was 24.6.0 on Windows. I was planning on checking the console but I had to restart due to some urgent messages that I needed to read in other channels that I was couldn't see due to this bug. I just upgraded to 31.2. If it happens again I'll check the console and report back.

It just happened again, and I've noticed that when I see it, it is when I've been pinged in a different channel than the one I am currently viewing. I can switch to any other channel except for the one that I've been pinged in.

Do you have more than one Thunderbird window open? (multiple chat panes)

No, just a single Thunderbird window. Tabs are mail, calendar, chat. Chat has joined 8 channels on irc.m.o.
