User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100423 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.3
Build ID: 20100423141150
Steps to reproduce:
Running Ubuntu 10.04
I tried to restore the bookmarks using Organize Bookmarks, but this will not work because of the filename of the backup bookmark file.
Actual results:
I couldn't restore the bookmarks.
Expected results:
The bookmark backup file should have been properly named so it could be restored.
I tried renaming the backup file to .json, but got error message, "could not process backup file".

Are you sure you are using firefox 3.6? cause that version is not supported anymore.
did you upgrade to Firefox 34 and then downgraded to a previous version?
I tried to downgrade even to 3.0, 3.0.3, 3.2. No luck. Same problem.

Firefox 32 has a new compressed format for backups, any version greater than 32 should be able to open those, while any version before can't.
The name of the backup you pointed up in the title of the bug is a valid backup name. I'm surprised that Firefox 33 cannot import it.
I just tried importing the file you attached in comment 0 with Firefox 33, and it imported bookmarks without any problem, I see 52 items in the bookmarks menu.
Could you please try in Safe mode? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode
Maybe you have an add-on that is replacing some of our internal functions.
Just tried. No luck.
"Unable to process the backup file."
p.s. maybe you can send me export in html to helios@whisper.su ?

So, the problem is that your backup is full of zeroes, it's basically a totally empty binary file. Thus it has no good information to restore. You can verify that opening the file with an hex editor.
Do you have older backups? You can maybe try with those.
I'm not sure why your files are in this status, could be a bug at the filesystem level, or something related to out OS.File library.
I'd suggest you to create a new bug in Toolkit / OS.File explaining that lz4 files generated by your Firefox are zero-filled. Give the most details you can regarding your computer, operating system and filesystem.

I'm sorry but all the backups you sent me are zero-filled, there's nothing there. They have the right size, but no contents.
There is clearly something in your system that breaks our code, or Hiren Boot Cd didn't copy them properly from the original folder.
Have all these backups been copied from the old profile, or are some of them (based on the date) more recent and been created by your current in-use profile?
Could you please send me a backup generated after the fact by your current profile?

I'm interested into knowing if that NEW profile with a new places.sqlite has valid backups... I want to understand if the problem is the system, or it was the profile copy.

ok based on the whole profile you sent me, all the files there are corrupt (zero-filled) that means the problem was some sort of bug with Hirens Boot CD, it was unable to copy file contents, it only created files but then didn't transfer their contents. I'm sorry.
I'd suggest you to create a completely new profile in Firefox, cause using these files you might suffer bugs.
