Comcast (U.S.) is offering to convert POP3 e-mail accounts to IMAP, as Windows 8 doesn't support POP3 mail accounts.
Currently, in Thunderbird and SeaMonkey, once an e-mail account is created and saved, the Preferences screen lists the type of account (POP3/IMAP) accordingly. Once a customer's account is converted from POP3 to IMAP, the Account Manager doesn't allow the account ot be to be changed to IMAP from POP3 without creating a brand new e-mail account.
My suggestion is to offer a pull-down menu once an account is created, to offer a switch between POP3 and IMAP, as other providers (AOL, Google, etc.) offer both IMAP and POP3 accounts. Thank you.
Yeah, this has been on the wish list for quite a while. For the time being, you'll have to move it manually as described in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Convert_a_POP_account_to_a_IMAP_account

What does a *minority* operating system have to do with the type of an email account that is actually accessed with a separate client application (that has to be and can be installed on that OS)? Also, if Comcast only *offers* to convert the account it doesn't mean it is mandatory. You can keep POP3 if that has suited you till now.

It's operating system independent. Windows, Linux, Mac.
Comcast IMAP has been in 'beta' for at least one year already, if not longer. A customer has to request conversion of their account from POP3 to IMAP.
rsx11m: 13 years - yes, it /has/ been a quite a while.
