# Overview This bug is to discuss options for the video on the Hello Product Page. The video will appear at the bottom of the page. It will either embed on the page, or open in an overlay. # Current Designs http://cl.ly/04262U1I3B0N # Talking Points - Reservations about YouTube - Concerns over l10n - Opens to an overlay for a bigger play - Video will be ready for launch, but probably not for design - Will screenshots communicate this as well as a video? - Or a video that you can scrub through the steps, like this... http://cl.ly/image/0u400Z1X2f1h - Can/should we only show video in en-US?
Videos are bad in general, because subtitles still represent a sub-optimal experience. Add to it that this is not a promotional video with fancy images and music, it's something you need to watch to understand how the product works. Either you look at the images or the subtitles. And images are going to display a product in English, so extremely confusing. Do we really want to explain how the product works in details in a mozilla.org page? Don't we have SUMO for that specific purpose (and with a much flexible platform)?
+1 for SUMO and +1 for no video
Hi Pascal and Flod- I think we are moving forward with the video, but it possibly won't have words or text. Hi Lizz- Could you please mark this one a duplicate of the bug you have open for a Hello video. Thx.

Hi Jenn - I don't have one open for the video yet, we'll use this one going forward. Thanks!

Comments from community engagement: https://basecamp.com/1897137/projects/7594409/messages/33845131 Notes from our content meeting: - Will live on the bottom of the product page - Engaging, informative way that pays off the benefit of the feature of the browser - Could be: here’s how you find it, steps you take to have a convo, show a convo - Could be emotional - 1. How to use 2. Want to use it! - Points: easy to use – it’s built in; it’s free!; no account needed; it’s a human connection - Audience: consumers/users - Opening sequence: saying hello or displaying the word “hello” in different language - The chat bubbles of different languages could come together at the end to form the hello logo - Could we do this without words (music only – video demo w/o word instruction to avoid l10n and keep it international?)
Do you have a due date for this video yet?
Due date is Dec 29th.
Here is the current WIP video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfoyhLuZihk As you'll notice there are some captions which appear on the screen, but no audible words (other than "Hello"). Here is the ask for the localization team - GA 35 (January 13th) - The captions which appear in the video file will be pulled from the copy already being translated for the Product Page (bug 1050483). - The video will launch serving 6 priority locales (en-US, en-GB, de, id, pt-BR, Mandarin). - 6 different video files will be created - one for each locale - with the translated text embedded directly into the video. # The ask of the l10n team will be to review the translations for consistency within the context of the video. GA 36 (February 24th) - except for the locales above, we will launch to all locales with YouTube subtitles. - priority locales will continue to serve the video with the embedded captions. - we'll use copy already being translated for the product page. # The ask of the l10n team will be to review the translations for consistency within the context of the video. Questions for :flod/:pascalc: 1. If we give you a doc showing the lines we will use in the video (and confirming they are already being translated for the product page), when will you need the finalized copy? - doc (text is sample for now): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VNXsdyELR1jX2ObJEPRkpJnaf-RE3A4N7jT3Tin23cQ/edit?usp=sharing 2. Will your team need finished video files for each locale for this review? Or can you use the WIP link + doc to review? 3. Regarding the screenshots in the video, are these okay to be in en-US for all locales? 4. re: Mandarin, will you give us an idea of the popularity of Mandarin locales (zh-TW, zh-CN, zh-HK), and what is most popular/reasonable for review by the 13th? Thank you! Thank you.

(In reply to Cory Price [:ckprice] from comment #8) > - The video will launch serving 6 priority locales (en-US, en-GB, de, id, > pt-BR, Mandarin). At this point I really need someone to explain to me, possibly with numbers, why we keep using 'id' as a priority locale, and we ignore locales like es-ES, fr or ru. That doesn't make any sense to me, but it might be that I'm just missing some information. Note also that Indonesian is not a reactive locale these days. en-GB: we don't localize web parts in en-GB. Chinese: in terms of coverage probably zh-CN, but it's not as fast as zh-TW when it comes to translation. Given the deadline, I'd say zh-TW. > 1. If we give you a doc showing the lines we will use in the video (and > confirming they are already being translated for the product page), when > will you need the finalized copy? I have a different question: once you have the finalized copy, how much time do you need to make the final video with localized text? Of these 4 locales, right now we have only German. And that's not unexpected, considering that I put the deadline for January 11. https://l10n.mozilla-community.org/~pascalc/langchecker/?locale=all&website=0&file=firefox/hello.lang > 2. Will your team need finished video files for each locale for this review? > Or can you use the WIP link + doc to review? Final video needs to be checked. For example I'm thinking about font issues (e.g. Chinese), or exposure time not long enough to actually read the text. > 3. Regarding the screenshots in the video, are these okay to be in en-US for > all locales? Honest opinion, they look pretty bad, especially the animation on the "Start a conversation" button that turns into text.

Thanks for your reply :flod. Answers are below. (In reply to Francesco Lodolo [:flod] from comment #9) > At this point I really need someone to explain to me, possibly with numbers, > why we keep using 'id' as a priority locale, and we ignore locales like > es-ES, fr or ru. That doesn't make any sense to me, but it might be that I'm > just missing some information. Note also that Indonesian is not a reactive > locale these days. For Hello, ID is seen as a proxy market for SE Asia and we think the connectivity is better in ID than say Vietnam, so we'd like to test Hello in that market. The other locales were chosen because there is good overlap in those markets between our partner and Mozilla (except ID). We can use our partner's network of telcos to further support growth of Hello in these markets. We'd like to move forward with ID. We've also added es-ES per your recommendation as a nice to have for Jan 13th. > en-GB: we don't localize web parts in en-GB. We've removed en-GB from the document. > Chinese: in terms of coverage probably zh-CN, but it's not as fast as zh-TW > when it comes to translation. Given the deadline, I'd say zh-TW. Sounds good, document has been updated. > I have a different question: once you have the finalized copy, how much time > do you need to make the final video with localized text? It will take ~1 day to incorporate localized text and generate a video file. > Final video needs to be checked. Adding a needinfo? for :flod for the timing question.
Flags: needinfo?(francesco.lodolo)
I don't think there's a problem with timing. We already have the localization for de, es-ES, zh-TW, currently missing id and pt-BR. Once you chose the final text for the video, I can send an email to all these teams and ask them to check the English video and tell us if they see any issue with reusing the strings from the page (or propose different text), then we need to confirm the final video with localized text. I'll send a mail to pt-BR and id to make sure they're aware of this project, so we'll have the localization ready before the deadline.

Thanks Flod! We're looking to have the final copy Monday/Tuesday.
Hi, I'm wondering how "complete" the video would be localized. Say, would the Firefox Start page/Hello UI parts in the beginning of the video localized too? Besides, I have finished the strings for web parts, but not able to see the stage yet. For zh-TW texts in the video, would it be possible to move the order of the sentences/texts in the localized video if needed?
:jpetto, just want to make sure you're okay with the specifications for this video for Jan 13th. 1. For the locales we've identified in this thread[0], we will show the video callout section[1]. 2. All other locales will have this section hidden. 3. The video will open into a larger overlay when clicked. Regarding #3 - do we an existing style for this? (cc: :jbertsch) [0] Hello video copy: https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/spreadsheets/d/1VNXsdyELR1jX2ObJEPRkpJnaf-RE3A4N7jT3Tin23cQ/edit#gid=0 [1] Demo product page URL (video section at the bottom): https://www-demo2.allizom.org/en-US/firefox/hello/

Yep, showing the video section only for specific locales works. Opening the video into a modal shouldn't be a problem, however we will need a screenshot for placement in the footer video section. We can use our standard modal UI, which can be seen on the FxOS devices page (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/os/devices/) - just pick a country and click "Get a phone".

Hi :flod, The 4 localized videos are ready for the l10n team to review[0]. In the review document you'll find links to each video, as well as an area for the team to comment in. This is only a suggestion, so feel free to deliver feedback to us however you want. (In reply to Francesco Lodolo [:flod] from comment #12) > Once you chose the final text for the video, I can send an email to all > these teams and ask them to check the English video and tell us if they see > any issue with reusing the strings from the page (or propose different > text), then we need to confirm the final video with localized text. The finalization of the English copy and the embedding of the localized text fell in line with each other today. The process of embedding the localized text into the video went faster than expected, so we should be able to process any feedback fairly quickly. When do you expect we'll receive all feedback? Would next Tuesday the 6th be possible? (In reply to Francesco Lodolo [:flod] from comment #9) > Note also that Indonesian is not a reactive > locale these days. Is there an update on when we think Indonesia could be ready? Is this something we should factor in our projects moving forward? Sent another email this morning, I was hoping to have the file localized by now. I think we should stop using Indonesian as one of our must-have locales, unless we manage to increase the size of the team.

Emails sent, also got a reply from the Indonesian team. I asked them to prioritize the translation for the strings used in the video, since for the rest of the strings we have more time. Hopefully we'll get them before the end of the day.
Hi, I think we'll need to make a few modifications in es-ES. There's an ongoing discussion on how to best translate "video conversation". I'll keep you posted as soon as that issue is resolved.
(In reply to Francesco Lodolo [:flod] from comment #21) > Emails sent, also got a reply from the Indonesian team. > > I asked them to prioritize the translation for the strings used in the > video, since for the rest of the strings we have more time. Since this video will live on the website, we need to make sure that the website is ready in ID, otherwise having the video localized isn't as big of a priority. Does it still make sense for them to focus on the strings in the video first?
We actually have the entire file localized already. https://svn.mozilla.org/projects/mozilla.com/trunk/locales/id/firefox/hello.lang Page: https://www-demo2.allizom.org/id/firefox/hello/ Note also the feedback from the zh-TW team about font and punctuation symbols, and German about the text. >"The copy is good, but the punctuation marks are in the wrong place, which is a China script standard. > You can use Source Han Sans TC / Noto Sans CJK T Chinese / Microsft Jhenghei or Heiti TC as font for these texts. > Please refer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_punctuation#Punctuations"
Hi everyone, I just updated the web copy, and also added a few comments on the spreadie. Please check them out. Thank you and happy 2015!

Happy New Year and thank you for reviewing the video! > Note: To keep punctuation consistent, there should be a full stop at the end of every on-screen message. Will you please elaborate on this comment? Would you consider this as a "nice to have", or does the lack of a stop make the messages unreadable in es? Thank you again!
Flags: needinfo?(inma.barrios)
Note that the text has changed in r136656. @inma Just to avoid confusion, can you put the updated text (including punctuation) directly in the spreadsheet for each string?
@Cory, this is definitely a "nice to have" thing - It's about correctness rather than style. @Francesco, I just updated the spreadie with the text and the correct punctuation. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi! I believe we need to add a few seconds to each text on the pt-BR video. Maybe 4 seconds it's enough. Also, can I share this video the community, so we get some opinions about the text?
Here is the localized id version http://youtu.be/eVQUzmyvjT8 ... and here are the 1st revisions for the languages below Chinese http://youtu.be/4b4094IUr9s German http://youtu.be/CZnwWn7Wdn4 Spanish http://youtu.be/j_vdnXmF__k Brasil http://youtu.be/khqUklRSI1o
CCing missing localizers. Can you confirm if everything looks good with the links in the comment above?
Hi Team: The video copy document[0] has been updated with the newest revision. Please enter new comments in the "l10n Review R1" sheet. You may check the previous round of feedback in the "l10n Review" sheet. :flod - will you please send the new ID video out to the appropriate team member(s)? (In reply to Marcelo Araldi from comment #29) > Also, can I share this video the community, so we get some opinions about > the text? Unless anyone objects, I don't think this will be a problem. We're hoping to receive all feedback by Monday. Thanks! German looks fine.
Chinese version looks good to me.
I've updated the Indonesian text in the review document to make it shorter and/or clearer. I feel that the timing of "Start your first conversation today" is too short. Is it possible to make it longer like the other strings?
Brazilian portuguese looks fine.
Any further comments on es-ES? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_vdnXmF__k

Do we have any of the final URLs ready yet? Will the first round of videos still live on our CDN as we previously discussed, or will they live on YouTube?
Thanks Rainer! Who's making the call on the screenshot/thumbnail? My vote is for #2 - kids and puppies demand attention. :D
Hey all, I've asked mart3ll to check this out as well.

This completes the work for GA 35 for the brand video. Bug 1119046 has been opened to track the execution of subtitles on the video targeting GA 36.
