"No auto brightness" is the default value when switching on the device (changed in bug 816133).

We should evaluate whether the current default behavior for auto brightness works fine on all devices and light conditions and possibly reenable it by default.

I was also annoyed by this feature, but I have yet to try a 2.2 build containing this fix.
This problem can be reproduced on latest build of Aries 2.5&master, Flame 2.5& master. After user flashes or resets device, the "Adjust Automatically" is toggled Off by default and the level of brightness is maximum.
