Details

Dear Sir or Madam, my problem is about the German umlauts (ä, ö, ü) in e-mails that I receive. The umlauts aren't shown correctly, when I open received e-mails the first time. When I close the e-mails and open them a second time the umlauts are shown correctly. I don't know how to get rid of that bug. All the instructions I found in the internet about that problem didn't help me. The problem still exists. I think several other users of Thunderbird know that problem, too. Otherwise they wouldn't write about it in the internet. Yours sicerely Edwin Hartmann
I have seen cases where umlauts in UTF-8 encoded e-mail didn't show correctly when opening an e-mail. Sadly I could never reproduce this problem in a predictable fashion as the e-mail would display correctly upon repeated opening. I have also seen cases where replying didn't show the special characters correctly, sadly also not reproducible. Can the reporter supply a reproducible case?
Summary: bug with showing letters in e-mails → Special characters (like German umlauts) not showing correctly when opening e-mails for the first time
I think this has nothing to do with first opening a new message. I've just opened an old sent UTF-8 encoded message and saw this: === ... das ausgefüllte Formular ... schon für wichtig. Für einen weiteren Anruf wäre ich daher dankbar. === Switching to another tab and then returning to this tab already fixed the erroneous display. Yes, it happens at random but it will be hard to fix without a reproducible case.

I've changed my mind, let's forward duplicate that since the other bug has more details.
