I'm going to attach a .reg file which, if installed, places a Mozilla icon on
the desktop that is, like IE, not a shortcut, but rather a fixed element on the
desktop like the Recycle Bin, Network Neighbourhood and My Computer are.

It also puts a Mozilla-icon under 'My Computer'.

Dunno if it's useful, you decide :)

Some comments:
* I had to use an icon from mozctl.dll, mozilla.exe didn't work.
* I generated a GUID myself (using a MS program), don't know if it should be
requested from Microsoft, or if there's some Mozilla GUID already present..
* Drag-and-drop doesn't work yet
* Properties don't either, but i'm not sure which properties should be
displayed, it might be useful to start the Profile Manager from there (dunno
if it's possible)

If you want more info, mail me...
Save this attachement as 'MozillaOnDesktop.reg' somewhere and double-click it
(Or first view the contents :). To uninstall, you have to remove the keys by
hand (using regedit) unfortunately.
Nice, but one small remark. Make sure to change this info by hand:

"C:\\Program Files\\mozilla.org\\Mozilla\\mozctl.dll"
and
"c:\\program files\\mozilla.org\\mozilla\\mozilla.exe"

In case you don't use this path ^_~
I'm sure we'd want to do this with windows registry commands in the install
script, so we'd know the correct user-chosen install path. Thanks for posting
which keys to modify.

Gregg, how about you evaluate whether this is something we want?

in fact, imho having *NO* mozilla icon on the desktop should also be an option
during installation. This can be done by a check box similar to that for
QuickLaunch (turbo) mode.

Many installers these days feature such option.

I install mozilla each day and everytime i have to delete the desktop icon :(

Reopening. This is *not* about shortcut icons. This is obvious from my comment
which first mentions the other bug, the summary, the original report, as well as
the attachment. Bug 28174 is about providing UI for shortcuts.

* I had to use an icon from mozctl.dll, mozilla.exe didn't work.

The mozilla.exe icon works for me (using 2002062908 on XP). I think there was a
problem with pre-1.0 that has now been sorted.
I don't like IE's special icon because I can't drag to it. I removed the
special icon and created a real shortcut. I don't see any reason to mimic IE here.
I'm not sure how useful this is. I always hated the special treatment that the
Exploder icon gets - it *should* be an shortcut/alias, not a regular file. And
it should be an optional install (See bug 28174).

As long as someone can show me why this is necessary, I vote WONTFIX. I always
show the difference between Exploder and Mozilla as a proof what Micro$oft is
giving a special treatment to Xploder. It was a bit of a surprise to me, to read
that it's actaully possible to do the same thing. I have never seen it used in
another application.
I also vote for WONTFIX. I see comments on making this optional and
on wontfixing this. There need to be rationales that this feature will
improve usability and worth the effort to fix this.
