Filing this to see if we want to take a look at the default Home Panels position and ordering. With bug 1073053, bug 1064386, etc, it might be worth stepping back to take a look at our defaults.

Currently we ship with:

Mobile
---
 - Synced Tabs,
 - Recent Tabs,
 - History
 - Top Sites (Default)
 - Bookmarks
 - Reading List

Tablet
---
 - Top Sites (Default)
 - Bookmarks
 - Reading List
 - History
 - Recent Tabs
 - Synced Tabs

Now that we have 2 more panels than we originally did, I think it's time to question whether or not it's worth having the default all the way at the left on tablets.

A simple solution here would be to make things consistent between phones and tablets, but I think we should think about the fact that right now there are 3 panels to the left of the default, and only 2 to the right, so it might look weird on tablets to have the default be a seemingly random panel off to the right, since we don't have the same logic to center the selected panel in the tab strip.

Yeah, I think having a different UI for the headers like we're talking about in bug 1073053 will really affect this.

Going to think about what our default should be here.

Leaving a note here to consider this with iOS side as well since they've adopted this metaphor too.

Now that bug 1073053 landed, have we decided on a default home panel ordering that we're happy with? Can we close this?

Using the tablet ordering and making the default panel / top sites the first panel again was our first shot. We can try to tweak it depending how popular panels are or which ones we want to feature more.

I think having Reading List break up History & Bookmarks is a bit strange.. I talked to Sebastian and Darrin about this to get some thoughts.

Will mull over the proposed reorder of:

top sites, bookmarks, history, reading list, synced tabs, recent tabs. vs

top sites, bookmarks, history, recent tabs, synced tabs, reading list

Leaving NI on for now.

Let's go with

top sites, bookmarks, history, synced tabs, recent tabs, reading list

thoughts?

I think this makes sense.

I think we should just update the default order, and any users that have updated their panel order in the past won't see any change.

Out of the scope for this bug, but can we also think about the UX when users have the non-leftmost panel set as the default? I feel like it looks weird now that we don't automatically center the selected title. Maybe we should try to always center that selected title when the user opens the home pager? I don't know how much work this would be, or if it's worth it.

Okay, let's try that. I do not have a very strong opinion. Most of my browser usage is triggered from outside and only every now and then from panel content.(In reply to :Margaret Leibovic from comment #8)

I would like to avoid building a component that behaves very differently than what people are used from other apps. Eventually I'd like to use TabLayout from the design support library and get rid of the custom one.

Looking at Google Play they always have the second tab selected by default (after selecting apps/games/movies/...).

With scrollable tabs, I think as long as the default is one of the first two and on-screen, this should be fine. This is also something the user should be aware of in the "re-ordering" UI/UX. So, I propose we look at that as a part of bug 974983. I think that needs some love :)

Extending the circle of reviewers. I'd really like to get the new default order in 42 along with the "scrollable tabs".
