We'd like to improve the new account creation experience. Currently we're using ConfirmAccount extension which requires manual review of all account requests. This creates work for account reviewers and a bottleneck for new users. Ideally we can put appropriate anti-spam measures in place and re-open registration to all.

Do we think spam accounts are created by bots targetting lots of MediaWikis, or poorly-paid actual human beings? If the former, I'm sure we could think of some Mozilla-specific question (e.g. "Who is the Chief Lizard Wrangler?") we could ask that the user could research and put in the answer to, in one of the form fields.
