+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #531285 +++ Bug 531285 aims to allow Thunderbird to offer multiple map providers to be used for the "Get Map" button in the Addressbook contact display. In the bug here, we can discuss what map services/providers to add to the default Thundebird/Seamonkey that is shipped in the en-US language. The current default service is Google Maps. The next option is OpenStreetMap. This bug exists to discuss which one should be the default for new installations and if any more services should be added. The map services can be added under these conditions: 1. TB will not download any data/map tiles from the service itself. 2. The service must provide a search function that is just a URL and a query string, e.g. like http://map.service.com/getmap?find=<street>,<city>,<country> . 3. TB merely opens the browser with the search URL prefilled with address data from the addressbook contact. This is only for the en-US language of TB. Other languages/regions can already set up their own services independently of the decisions in this bug (and could do so forever, but only 1 service).
You can see at mxr.mozilla.org/l10n-central/search?string=mapit&find=region.properties&tree=l10n-central for what map services different languages of TB already use. Yes, most of them just use the country specific variant of Google maps. But there are also some interesting alternatives.
