114545 - offline: mac only: news: using download/sync now window to download a newsgroup causes a hang when you hit ok button

Using 2001121008 mac os 10.1 build and regressing back
to 2001-11-26-7 trunk when this bug first appeared. 2001-11-21 trunk
is ok.

It sometimes seems to work in os 9.1. I can reproduce the same
bug but once in a while it seems to work. Easier to reproduce
in os 10.1 builds.

Personally I think this bug is another side effect similar to
my other mac bug, bug 112993. As it appears in the same time
frame.

Could bug 109117 be cause of my problems? don't know.

Problem:
 in modern theme (can't test classic due to bug 112993), if
 a user tries to use download/sync and download a newsgroup, 
 the download/sync now window will freeze once you hit ok button.
 Cancel and Ok don't work. You can click the select button but
 once the 'items for offline use window' pops up, you can't cancel
 that window.

 And I tried different combinations and the only time it will hang
 is if  1)You have 'Newsgroup messages' checkbox in Download/sync window
          checked
        2)And a newsgroup selected in 'items for offline use' window

 This does not happen when doing a download/sync of just mail only.
 This only applies when downloading newsgroups. I don't know what
 is so unique with news.

Steps to reproduce:
 1.start messenger
 2.subscribe to a newsgroup or two if you have not already
 3.get the headers
 4.File|Offline|Download/Sync Now
 5.Check 'Newsgroup messages' checkbox
 6.Click select button and choose a newsgroup to download
 7.Click ok
 result: window doesn't dissapear. Click cancel or ok and nothing happens.
         Click Select button and that brings up 'items for offline use'
         window. But now when you click cancel or ok in that window
         nothing happens. It hangs
 expected: Download/Sync now window to dissapear and news megs to be
           downloaded.

David I'm not sure this is a dupe of 112993 or not. And I know
Mac is not your specialty.

Not only is it not my specialty, I don't have one here so I can't even try this.
 Could you try the following and see if any of them work on the mac?

1. Select a few news messages and do a File | Offline | Get selected messages.
2. Bring up the news properties, configure the newsgroup for offline use, and do
a "download now".
Do either of those work?

Also, could you try generating an nntp protocol log in the test case you report
and see if we're doing anything with the news server?

Attachment: Log of both my download/sync now and doing a get selected/download now

This is using 2001121008 mac os 10.1 build.
I created a profile that had only a newsgroup account.
I've combined both both logs into 1 file.

First log is from doing a download/sync now. After
it hangs, I have to do a force quit to terminate the
application.

2nd log has me doing the get selected mesgs and using
download now button off the properties menu. Both work
David. No problems with them. I was able to read the
mesgs when offline.

other fixes have fixed this?

using
2002-02-01-03-trunk/ mac 9.2 and mac os 10.1.2

I don't see this problem anymore. Tried both modern/classic
themes. Tried downloading mail and/or newsgroups and no problems.
Using download/sync now window produced no hang/crash.

I am not sure if your fixes or fixes to bug 108791 (crash when accessing the 
Autocomplete Prefs dialog ) fixed it. But it works.
As a result my other offline classic bug 112993 looks 
fixed to.

I'll change status to resolve fixed for u.

Using commercial build: 2002-02-15-08-trunk mac 9.2.2, mac 10.1.2

verified, in both modern/classic, that  clicking ok window in download/sync
works as expected. No hang and mesgs are downloaded. Tried
mail and news, news by itself, and mail by itself and it works.
