I get my mail off an IMAP server (dredd), and normally read messages with the
message preview pane closed (click on it to go all th way down), opening
messages in another window by double-clicking on the message title (this is the
mode most like Eudora for Mac which I use at home, and it doesn't waste screen
real estate on stuff I'm not interested in while I'm reading the message body).
Sometimes, if the server is being slow and the animated N in the top right
corner of the mail window is moving at the time when I double-click on the
message title (presumably the mailer is trying to get more message headers from
the server and this is taking a while?), then the new window for the message
opens but the message body text takes a very long time (over 10 seconds) to
appear in it, or may even never appear no matter how long I wait (presumably it
timed out). This problem only happens when the sever is slow - but dredd often
is. It happens to me annoyingly often on Mac, but never on Windows (I haven't
tried UNIX). On Mac, it only happens if I open the message in a new window by
double-clicking: if I instead open up the message preview area, then that
usually makes the message body get downloaded within at most a few seconds and
displayed in the message preview area, and then I can double-click on the
message title and read the message body it in a separate window the way I'm used
to. However, doing that is a real pain.
I've seen this, too, even on small messages when server is not obviously slow.
Even on Win98.

I'm going to mark this as a dup of 114965 which seems to exhibit the same
behavior in terms of not being able to load in the standalone even though it can
be viewed in the 3 pane.

Looking at 114965, I think the odds are good that this is not a duplicate of it.
It could be two different symptoms of the same problem, but I think it is more
likely to be two different problems with somewhat similar symptoms. I suggest
you leave the two bugs separate for the moment, but assign them to the same
engineer, and let him mark them as duplicate if it turns out that they really are.
