We want to ship Firefox Mobile with a good list of search engines for Croatian. We're going to work towards this in three phases. First, the localization team and the l10n drivers will look at the market for the language and come up with a good set of search providers. Mihovil, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on <https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Productization_guide>. For en-US, we currently use this set, to which we can fall back in the case of lacking localized alternatives: > Google (mobile version), Yahoo, Bing, Amazon, Twitter, Wikipedia (slightly different to desktop, 32x32 icon) We may also want to go with just a subset of the en-US engines, if that's more appropriate for the local market. Once we decide to use a particular search engine (and we test it on a mobile device), l10n drivers will contact the owner and ask for permission, and for specifics like proper search flags. Mihovil, we'll likely need your help to at least get the contact information. For search engines that we already ship with on desktop and that you would like to include in mobile as well, the permission is not needed. Consider using a mobile version of the engine if one is available. Also, please make yourself familiar with instructions regarding the <Description/> element at <https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Integrated_Search_Instructions>. For mobile, we'll want 64x64 size images, too. Once we have a specification on what the search engines for Croatian should look like, flod (Francesco Lodolo) and the localization team will work on an implementation on that. flod will create and attach patches for the desired changes and get them reviewed. After a successful review, flod will land them. Mihovil, if you're interested, you could create the patches, too. You'd ask flod for review on those before landing. Please don't commit any modifications in browser/searchplugins to the hg repository without a patch reviewed by flod, Stas, Axel or someone else appointed by the l10n drivers. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus the extra care here. The Croatian team and flod will be driving this bug to completion.
I can tell you right now that there are no domestic "google like" search engines in Croatia. Most popular search engine is Google, probably Yahoo and Bing after. From seach engines not listed is your example, I would like to include: https://www.startpage.com and https://duckduckgo.com/ as privacy oriented search engines. And from local pages, http://www.njuskalo.hr/ which is most popular "yellow pages" for selling used goods in Croatia. Probably something like Craigslist in USA, but just for used goods, not jobs etc... Any comments on those?
I agree with Mihovil's suggestions. Google.hr is by far the most used search engine. I'd say Bing.com holds the second spot because it's comes as default search engine on new computers with preinstalled Windows and it's localized to Croatian. Yahoo would be a third choice. DuckDuckgo.com should definitely be on the list, as well as Croatian version of Wikipedia (hr.wikipedia.org).
Side note: we need to limit the number of shipping searchplugins on mobile, since the screen is small and we don't want to overcrowd the selection screen. And besides Yahoo, Google, and Bing we always try to include Wikipedia. http://www.njuskalo.hr/ If you decide to move on with this, we need to get permission from the website to include the searchplugin. You'll need to get in touch with them and get formal approval (an email is enough).

Please also include their formal approval in this bug so that it is documented publically and somewhere we can all easily find. I believe they'll also need to provide a 32x32 px icon for the search plugin (flod can correct me if I'm wrong).

Also already received an email from them.
Gave them Francesco's email, they will contact him for everything.

Hi Sas and team, BD has a few questions about this provider that they'd like to get your feedback on: 1) Should this be added to desktop, as well as mobile? If not, what are the advantages of adding it to one and not the other? 2) What is the use-case we're satisfying by adding this provider? 3) Who are this provider's current competitors? Thank you for your patience with this. It's been a learning experience for all of us.
Arg, sorry Sasa, I'm apparently terrible at typing today :-(
> 1) Should this be added to desktop, as well as mobile? If not, what are the > advantages of adding it to one and not the other? It's probably ok to add it if you decide to add it for mobile. > 2) What is the use-case we're satisfying by adding this provider? We are satisfying your request in first post. As I understood you, you want to localize browser to be close to users in that country. > 3) Who are this provider's current competitors? Only real competitor which covers all same aspects as njuskalo is http://www.oglasnik.hr/ Oglasnik is much older and it's origins are as newspapers (ads, yellow pages...). Only in last 10 (or so years) they started web part. Njuskalo never had newspaper counterpart, it was web only yellow pages from start. Other competitors are specialized yellow pages for realestate or other areas, but not all in one except "Oglasnik". Here is a fresh list of most visited webpages in croatia: http://www.audience.com.hr/ Njuškalo is number 4. From first 10 most visited sites, only 2 aren't news portals. Njuškalo on number 4 and forum.hr (bulletin board) on number 10. Anyway, you don't need to add it if you don't want it. It was my response to your request.
Thank you for your responses. (In reply to Mihovil Stanic [:Mikeyy - L10n HR] from comment #10) > > 1) Should this be added to desktop, as well as mobile? We're simply trying to learn more about this provider. Thanks for your response. I'll send this along to BD.
> I should have rephrased the question, sorry about that. It's more a matter > of understanding why you've selected this specific provider and how it > benefits users over other providers. Because I can't think of any other "broad audience" croatian webpage which would have any value for Firefox users. We don't have croatian search providers and news portals search is pointless.
(In reply to Jeff Beatty [:gueroJeff] from comment #11) > I should have rephrased the question, sorry about that. It's more a matter > of understanding why you've selected this specific provider and how it > benefits users over other providers. Hi Jeff, njuskalo.hr is equivalent of eBay, but it targets only Croatian users. Over the last couple of years, this service has gained huge popularity as it offers it's users easy way to buy and sell new or used goods and services. The service is probably the most popular because it's completely free. Their revenue comes from paid/promoted ads. I'm not familiar with the situation in the US, but I suppose that if you are looking for something (e.g. used car, new smartphone or even apartment), you probably look at eBay or Amazon. Well, over here, the first place you look for something is at njuskalo.hr And some trivia... "njuškalo" translates to "snoopy" in English. That's why their mascot is a dog, which snoops for the best deal for whatever you're looking for :-)
Thank you Sasa! This provides us with a bunch of great info. Flagging mconnor to be sure this info fits the BD requirement before we proceed to add to Fennec and desktop.

Joanne, could you help unblock us on this? We'd like to be able to move forward as soon as possible. We just want to be sure that the info the l10n team has provided fits within BD requirements.
Flags: needinfo?(mconnor) → needinfo?(jnagel)
I'm removing the njuskalo.hr request from this bug into bug 1193356 in order to unblock launching this project. Flod, can we land the rest of the p12n requests (those with which we already have agreements in place) in Beta and Aurora so we can sign-off on 41 and have that be the launch version?

Attached patch bug1158073.patchSplinter Review
This patch uses the same searchplugin en-US ships, minus eBay. Only replaced Amazon with Amazon en-GB (like desktop), and Wikipedia with the localized version. Final list: * amazon-en-GB * bing * duckduckgo * google * twitter * wikipedia-hr * yahoo Technical notes: * Wikipedia searchplugin has the same structure of en-US, plus the icon that will land in bug 1190968 * Amazon uses SSL (bug 1179332) @Mihovil Can you confirm if this list looks good before going into review?

Hi Flod, I can confirm that this looks ok, since it's exact copy of providers from Firefox desktop. Cheers!

Note that this change is pending Legal review still. l10n should r- this until that work has been completed.
Here's where I eat crow. Please ignore Comment #20, I need to read more better.
