I think that this bug and probably bug #1270425 are both related to
Thunderbird not handling correctly certain error messages from SMTP servers.
That was duplicated to Bug 780124 - After "4XX error on greeting from SMTP server" or "error response to SMTP command", mail is saved in Sent folder and composition window is closed, despite that SMTP send of mail fails - which has since been closed.

Matteo, are you still seeing issues?
Altough I'm currently unable to find a message that triggers the SMTP error, I believe TB behavior for some time now is to go back to the compose window instead of saving to Sent and closing it; unfortunately I'm not able to tell from which version the behavior changed.
