Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/7.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; .NET4.0C; OfficeLiveConnector.1.5; OfficeLivePatch.1.3; McAfee; .NET4.0E; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; rv:11.0) like Gecko

Steps to reproduce:

operating system is Windows 7
I run security package Avg 2015.0.6030
As of today Thunderbird 38.1.0

Up until today (yesterday worked as described) I have been getting intermittent freezes when Thunderbird and Avg were scanning incoming email.
They could be unlocked by Ctrl-Alt-Del an ending all running tasks and bringing tasks back up.

However now every time they both scan system locks up totally and requires a
reboot. Ctrl-Alt-Del have no effect, system dead.

I was wrong problem continues with Avg Virus and Email scan off

Condition seems to happen after Thunderbird Scan Pane is displayed lower right corner then the grey dims and system dead.

Seems to run in the Safe mode but have not yet tested receiving email

I'm seeing similar or same. I get a total Windows UI hang, but the disk access light keeps flashing.
Looks like a graphics bug caused by the new message alert trying to work with hardware acceleration.
The new message sound makes it, but the alert box might not, or might be empty, or with dimmed text.

My workaround was to uncheck hardware acceleration (or toggle layers.acceleration.disabled to true),
or use Control Panel to change the theme back to a (less efficient) Aero theme, e.g. Windows 7 Basic
to Windows 7. One can of course also turn off the alert when new messages arrive, or install 31.7.0.

For me, safe mode with networking worked, but graphics settings are much different. Normal with lots
of things such as AV, backup, etc. did not work. Use power switch. Is this like what originator saw?

Note, ggersch has gone back to using version 31. But should be retested again in version 38.2.0, or updating the graphics driver.

unknown. The information from ggersch is, so far, unclear.

Neither of those are related

Needs retest with version 38. At this point, when you retest it may as well be done with version 38.3.0 which will be out in a couple weeks

Reporter writes, I went ahead with 38.2. Low email activity today but had no problem with freezes. Will continue with 38.2 and go to 38.3 when available. If problem re-occurs I will let you know.
