Steps to reproduce:

In the latest version, the only options are to use the new tab page or to use a blank page (that is not about:blank).

Let the user define their own new tab page, as they used to be able to through browser.newtab.url.

As part of bug 1118285, a new extension hook has been added to support this. There's already an add-on making use of it: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

Would be nice to have as a part of the first-party UI, as opening tabs is an essential part of the browser experience.  Also, there's already an option for a blank page, it just doesn't do what it says.

Such an option is badly needed... I always disliked about:newtab / tiles and everything associated with it. I don't need it!

Being able to set "browser.newtab.url" to "about:blank" was always OK for me - at least there was a possibility to avoid all the (for me) useless clutter. Removing this option was an error!

An UI setting should be created ASAP! An add-on is not an option (where do we get if we need an add-on for every hidden setting we want to change?)

Eduard, this bug is about setting a custom web page as the new tab page, not about disabling tiles. There's a UI setting to disable tiles, see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/hide-or-display-sites-new-tab-page

What?!? Read and understand please!

Setting "browser.newtab.url" to "about:blank" is still the only real possibility to get a blank page as newtab page, see bug 1179593.

Please reopen!
