Details
After switching to FF with E10s it is no more possible to start FF in Offline Mode.
To test:
- Create 2 profiles for FF or start FF with the profile manager;
- Check "Work Offline" before start a profil;
- Start FF.
Expected:
- FF don't load the page from the web - FF is offline.
What happen:
FF load the pages from the web.

I wonder if we should just remove this option. I'm not sure why we need to support it.

its not quite the same feature, but seems related to offline and startup: I've seen offline mode before suspending a laptop to prevent firefox from bypassing a vpn when waking up. (the vpn is started asynchronously).

I work always with a lot of Windows (~10) ...
(Re-) Starting in Offline Mode and just reload the first Window I want to work with is much faster then start online and wait till all Windows are reloaded.

> its not quite the same feature, but seems related to offline and startup:
I know that a lot of user have requested this by Chrome, too.
Offline Mode also helps to fix a session that won't come up anymore online.
Cases can be when a page crash FF and the user want to bookmark all open tabs,
or when e.g. to much open windows or tabs run FF out of system recourses.
Also starting in Offline Mode prevent in general from connecting to pages and that is interesting when e.g. the user (admin) don't know what pages will after restart be loaded or a user don't want to create a connect/log/ping/reload on/to a server each time he restarts.
I normally use this feature ever!

I'll check to see what the difference, if any, is here between e10s and non-e10s

As far as I can remember I recognized it after my switch to e10s in FF40.0a2 but didn't reported it (and anything else) during FF40.0a2 to give the devs the chance & time to make FF more stable again and fix JS & the Mem (leaks) ...
... but I'm almost sure that I have tested it.
I guess the difference in e10s between using FF offline and start it offline is that firefox.exe restarts with a parameter (?) and don't deliver the parameter to the plugin-container.exe (that's why just in e10s) that this app know it should start offline.
I also guess there is no parameter yet to start the plugin-container offline.
But thats just speculative ...
Btw., OT:
I saw that there is a page of QA on Facebook.
Think it would be nice if there is a group for that too because I prefer FB Groups for information exchange (and team building & work) much more then mailing lists ...
Any change to do this ???

What I see in both release Firefox and Nightly(e10s); If you set the browser to Work Offline it will do so for that session. Shut down and restart the browser, both release Firefox and Nightly restart in online mode. I don't recall it ever being any different. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your steps to reproduce, Tobias? In any case, I do not think this is e10s isolated.
Severity: major → enhancement
Flags: needinfo?(twalker) → needinfo?(Tobias.Besemer)
Summary: (e10s) Starting FF in Offline Mode doesn't work anymore → Starting FF in Offline Mode doesn't work anymore

Note that there was a regression which I fixed in bug 1179779 (landed about a week ago).
Reading comment 0, my guess is that it's the same bug. New processes usually start in the same offline state as the main process.

Any change to get the fix in FF41.0a2, too?
