User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:40.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/40.0 Build ID: 20150826185949 Steps to reproduce: No steps needed, this is the default UI appearance. Actual results: Since a few Firefox versions ago (I'm not sure which, but I'm using Firefox 40.0.3 on Kubuntu 10.04), the icon at the left end of the search box now always shows a magnifying glass, instead of the icon for whichever search engine is currently selected. This is less useful because I can't tell at a glance which search engine is currently selected, and I frequently switch between them. I assume that the magnifying glass icon is always shown to better indicate that this is a search box (although I'm not sure why that's more helpful than the word "Search" which shows in that box by default), but that seems like it would only be helpful to new Firefox users who are unfamiliar with that box. Veteran users know what the box is for and would be better served by seeing which search engine is currently selected. Expected results: The icon should show the icon for whichever search engine is currently selected.
I figured out shortly after posting this that I can override the browser's stylesheets (using Stylish) to restore the engine button, which is still there but hidden by default. Given that, it would be nice if there was an about:config option that would toggle between the two, so that we don't have to dig into XUL and find element names.
