Opened https://www.google.co.uk/ in Firefox and tried to add it as a new custom search plugin.

There is no option in the search box to add https://www.google.co.uk/ as a new custom search, meaning that the small + sign on the search lens doesn't light up.

Firefox should have recognized https://www.google.co.uk/ as a valid search engine and offered the option to add it as a custom search.

BTW, manually dropping an already available google.co.uk.xml search plugin inside the searchplugins folder works, it's just that the interface apparently doesn't recognize this webpage/URL as a valid search engine.
We don't display the green (+) icon because this webpage doesn't offer an open search plugin (the HTML code of the page should have a line like <link rel="search" href="plugin.xml" title="Engine Name" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml">).
OK that's the reason, but if the AddtoSearchBar addon can still create a valid search plugin from the very same URL (which is proved by the fact that you can create such a plugin in a profile using AddtoSearchBar and then drop it in the searchplugins folder in another profile, and it will work) couldn't Firefox do the same on its own?

At a quick glance, I can't find any record of the AddtoSearchBar add-on now, but I suspect the add-on was looking in pages for a text box that looks like a search box... or something like that.

If so, we already have Add a keyword for this search, which has similar functionality. We also have bug 261124 for modifying/extending the keyword functionality so it gets added to the search bar.

There's also bug 1106626 about adding custom urls.

So I think I'm going to dupe to bug 261124 since that seems to be the closest.
