From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.8) Gecko/20020127 BuildID: 2002012705 I was prompted to select whether Mozilla should be set as the default mail app, on clicing okay I got this error message: "Mozilla Mail could not be set as the default mail application because a registry key could not be updated. Verify with your system administrator that you have write access to your system registry, and then try again." Then when I tried to launch Outlook 98, I get the following error: "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong version. This coulds have been caused by installing other messaging software. Please reinstall Outlook." The MAPI32.DLL file in C:\WINNT\system32 is 5KB in size, there is also a file called mapi32.ol_ which is 128KB. I am guessing that Mozilla replaced mapi32.dll and then failed to update the registry to reflect this change. I have tried replacing mapi32.dll with mapi32.ol_ but the former is in use by the system so I can't rename it. This looks as if it's related to bug 103230, but the steps listed there to fix it do not solve this problem. It's also related to bug 120359, but there is no report in that bug of the problem caused for Outlook. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Select Mozilla as the default mail app. This should fail with an error message due to incorrect permissions in the registry. 2. Try to start Outlook 98. Actual Results: Starting Outlook fails due to a corrupt mapi32.dll. Expected Results: Outlook should start.
confirming Mozilla should restore the original mapi.dll if the registry changes later are failing.

verified on Mozilla's 2002022103 build. Mozilla now makes a backup of the original DLL and restores it when Mozilla is uninstalled and is the default email client. Rajiv, please resolve this bug so it can be verified. trix
